{Levi's POV}

"Mama?" I asked as I laid sideways on our small cot and watched my mother fold her tattered clothes

"Mama?" I asked as I laid sideways on our small cot and watched my mother fold her tattered clothes. I could barely hold my eyes open, but there was something nagging at me and it kept me awake.
"Yes, Levi?" My mother's sweet voice lulled back as she glanced at me without stopping her movements.
"Who is... Who is my dad?" I asked sheepishly.
My mother sighed, and tilted her head at me as she set down one of her perfectly folded shirts. She took a couple steps forward and sat down on the cot that I laid on before placing a hand on my cheek.
"You keep asking that question, my boy, and I keep giving you the same answer," she scolded softly.
I shifted my eyes to the covers in front of me as my lungs let out a disheartened breath and my heart ached.
It was as if my mother could feel my inner turmoil, because she gently pulled my cheek back towards her until my eyes met hers again and she smiled.
"Honey, your father is not worth our time. Are you not happy with it being just us?" she chuckled as her thumb caressed my cheek and I could hear distant shouts coming from outside the house.

I glanced at the door and back to her

I glanced at the door and back to her.
I always hated living in fear, but even so I still did everyday.
I wanted to know who my father was because I wanted to know what parts of me came from him. I had so many questions, so many curiosities.
I wished I had a dad that would protect us from the atrocities of the Underground streets.
"Yeah... I-I just had questions..." I said through a sigh and my mother chuckled. I quickly furrowed my eyebrows and pursed my lips. "It's not funny!"
"I'm not laughing at you," my mother said sweetly as she playfully rolled her eyes. "I just didn't realize how much you've grown until now... Well, now you're wondering things and thinking for yourself, and it feels like just yesterday you were still drinking from a bottle. You aren't a baby anymore."
"No, I'm not," I mumbled as I turned my head away from her.
"Exactly... You'll be six in just a couple months, and I think you're ready to know about your father."
I quickly turned back to her with wide eyes.
"For real life?" I asked quickly and my mother nodded her head enthusiastically, but her eyes held a sadness I didn't detect at the time.
"For real life," she affirmed and scooted closer as her fingers ran their way through my hair. "What questions do you have, Levi?"
I quickly pushed the covers off my chest and sat up as I couldn't hold my excitement and I leaned in closer to her.
"What's his name? W-What does he look like? How did you meet him? When did-"
"Slow down, slow down, Levi," she giggled and I quickly sat back a little bit. I hadn't even realized that I was out of breath from talking too quickly, and pulled in heavy breaths.
I stared at her for several seconds with expectant eyes.
"Well?"
She shook her head at my eagerness and took a deep breath before grabbing my hand and holding it between hers.
"Well..." she began," I can't tell you his name and I can't tell you how we met, but I can tell you what he looks like."
I didn't bother complain about the fact that she was only willing to answer one of my three questions. I was just happy she was going to answer any at all, and quickly nodded my head as I waited for her to continue.
"He's a man of average height, not too short and not too tall. He has deep blue eyes, think lips, and light brown hair with a warm skin tone."
I tried to picture him in my mind, and it made me realize something.
