I had always known that I was going to Hogwarts. Ever since I had first visited the Dumbledore house as a young child, and they had explained to me that I had magic. I was the only one in my family like that.
I used to tell my parents about it all of the time. This magic that I had. This wizarding school that I was to attend once I turned eleven. I was so young at the time and so I always assumed that they put it down to an overactive imagination. They had died before I started at Hogwarts.
That wasn't something I thought about often. Anna left for America, not making it to her destination and soon our parents followed. My mother, father's second wife, died in childbirth. The doctors had told her that she was rather old to be having another baby, but she was excited. It had been a boy, but she died before she could see him, and he died before I could see my new little brother.
My father was never the same. He was distant and cold. He even got angry. So very angry. It was never at me, I knew that, but I looked so like my mother that, even at a young age, we were so similar. He committed suicide on my eleventh birthday, but I wasn't there. I was in Hogsmeade. Albus Dumbledore, who was just finished his last year in Hogwarts, had brought me to get my supplies. To get my wand.
I had stayed with them after that. I lived with Albus and Abe for years and I never set foot in my home again. I couldn't. I didn't have it in me. No one knew about how I had lost my entire family within a year, and no one needed to. I didn't even remember it all that much.
It wasn't until I was invited to the Scamander's for Christmas break that I told anyone.
"They're a little odd," Theseus told me.
"A little odd?" I questioned, perking a brow at the expression he had used to describe his parents.
Theseus was in his last year at Hogwarts and I was in my fifth. I knew that he had a little brother, Newt, and that he was to join me in Hogwarts next year but he had never spoken much of the rest of his family.
I wasn't completely sure why it was that he had invited me to his home for Christmas. I would usually spend it with Albus and Abe but the former was too busy getting ready to start as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Hogwarts and Abe wasn't one to stay home. I would probably end up spending it alone.
"They aren't like me," he tried to explain.
"Perhaps you aren't like them," I retaliated.
He smirked. "Perhaps. Look, just... don't change your mind about me once you meet them."
I shook my head with a small laugh. "Is that what you told Leta when she met them?"
Theseus' smile fell. "She hasn't met my family yet."
"Lucky me."
"Lucky you."
They were so kind, Theseus' family, but I understood why he called them odd. All three of them shared in a love for creatures. His parents were Hippogriff breeders and Newt talked about any and every small thing that he could. He would grow up entirely too curious for his own good.
Mr and Mrs Scamander were strange in a way. They wore clothing that I wasn't use to seeing and they spoke of things that had passed long ago. It was clear that they didn't get out much.
Despite that, dinner had been delicious and the bedroom I was staying in was small but comfortable. I felt terrible that I couldn't fall asleep in the bed and had somehow made my way outside to their back garden.
