My apartment was small. As were most things in London. It was odd how little I owned. How empty my suitcase looked on the bed after I had packed. Due to the fact that I was leaving tomorrow morning, Mr. Podmore decided to give the reports to someone else to file. I was thankful for that, and yet all I could think about was whether they were going to do it right. Whoever it was that Podmore had told to do my job.
I had one chance. That's what this was. One chance to prove that I could be an Auror. One chance to prove that I was worth something.
"You should get some tea," Anna told me, sitting cross-legged on my bed. "You're more calm when you've had a cup of tea."
I shook my head. "I have to stop imagining you."
"I'm just your inner conscious. You're thoughts in words." She acted it out, hands moving in the air. "It's more fun than just thinking it. Get some tea."
Sighing, I nodded, moving across to my small kitchen and placing the full kettle on the stove and turning the fire on underneath it.
I preferred the muggle way of life, despite being a witch. It was easier. Calmer. There was enough magic at work. I didn't need it home.
Perhaps it had something do with my childhood. We had lived in Godric's Hollow, only a couple of doors down from the Dumbledore's, but my home life was mundane. Being the only witch, I had no exposure to magic unless I was in Hogwarts. Maybe that was why I kept it this way. Because it was familiar.
Once the kettle boiled, I poured myself a small cup of tea, blowing on the top of it gently as I turned to look at my bed. The suitcase looked tiny against the sheets. It did have an extendable charm on it, meaning that the amount of things I could put in there were endless, and yet I wasn't sure that I had out enough things in there to fill it normally.
There was a loud pounding on my door, causing me to jolt slightly. The cup slipped out of my hand and I quickly reached out a hand, stopping it mid fall. Thank Merlin for wandless magic. Guiding it back up, I placed the steaming mug gently onto the kitchen counter. The person on the other side of the door knocked again, louder this time.
"Merlin," I muttered. "I'm coming! Give me a moment!"
Swinging the door open, I faltered slightly. Theseus Scamander stood on the other side, clothes and skin drenched in rain and his hair completely soaked. With his hand against the door frame, he looked at me with an expression that I hadn't seen in a long time. He looked... sad.
"Theseus..." I began.
"Don't go," he told me, panting.
"What?"
"To New York. It's selfish of me, I know."
"Yeah," I replied, straightening. "Pretty selfish."
He adverted his gaze. "I had to get drunk to tell you, but I don't want you to go."
Now taking notice of his state, I found that he was telling the truth. He swayed on his feet and his eyes danced around my face the way it did when he was drunk, and I had seen him drunk many times before.
"Come in," I muttered. "I'll make you a cup of tea so you can sober up."
Stepping aside, he stumbled into my apartment and pulling himself towards the small chair that sat in the corner by the window. It overlooked the city, and was often my favourite spot in the entire country.
