Sitting on a chair in Newt's case, I dropped my head into my hands and closed my eyes in an attempt to stunt the pain blossoming across my forehead from the gash in my skin.
"What happened to you?" Tina asked, crossing her arms over her chest as she turned to look at me.
I shook my head, taking note of Newt rushing around in the background. He checked on each of his creatures individually, making sure that they were all unharmed. He had no care for the conversation that the American Auror and I were having.
"He was pretty keen that I didn't follow you," I muttered in response. I didn't mention the questions that he had asked about Dumbledore and Grindelwald. In my mind, I was still trying to figure out why he was so obsessed by it.
"Newt!" I called and he stopped suddenly, facing me quickly. "They're alright. The only thing Graves got was the Obscurus."
Scamander sighed, nodding slowly as he approached. "I need to find Dougal."
If there was anything he needed to do, it was get some sleep, but we both knew that now wasn't the time to rest.
"Why was he so fascinated by it?" Goldstein asked.
Shaking my head, I let out a sigh. "Perhaps he wished to use it."
Tina looked at me, shocked. "Percival Graves is a respected Auror. He would never harm innocent people."
"This is the same Graves that just tried to kill me, is it not?" I countered and was met with her silence.
"It doesn't make sense. Up until five months ago, he didn't even care for this case," she added.
"What do you mean?" Newt inputted.
Goldstein uncrossed her arms, straightening. "We've been following this case for at least a year. Graves had no interest in it until recently. He's changed a lot."
I sighed, closing my eyes. "What if he isn't Percival Graves?" I posed the question, letting it hang in the air.
Newt and I shared a look. "It would explain his fascination with painting me as a Grindelwald fanatic," he replied, seeing exactly what I was thinking.
"What are you saying? That he is compromised?" Tina suggested.
Shaking my head, I looked at her. "I don't think he's Graves anymore. I think he's using an enchantment, Polyjuice isn't strong enough for this. I think he might be one of Grindelwald's followers."
Tina scoffed. "That's absurd."
Jacob, who until now had been far from the conversation rushed towards us with a damp cloth in his hand. He rushed towards me. "What's absurd?"
"Graves isn't Graves. He's an evil son of a bitch working for Grindelwald," I explained.
He bent down slightly, pressing the cloth against the gash on my forehead. "I never did like the guy. How are you feeling?"
I smiled at his attempts, taking the dampened cloth off of him. "Perfectly well. Once I get a wand, I'll heal any damage done." External damage.
He nodded, straightening and turning to look at the other two. "What do we do?"
"I need to find Dougal," Newt repeated, turning away and rushing for the supply closet.
"If Graves truly is as compromised as you think, surely there are more pressing matters than that," Goldstein argued calmly.
