"You can't bring him in," I argued, hurrying after Tina. She crossed the road, briefcase held tightly against her side.
"Miss Clayton are you aware of how many laws Mr Scamander has broken since arriving in America?" she posed.
"Probably too many to count, but that just... well that is simply just how Newt is," I tried.
The American Auror turned quickly, causing me to stop abruptly. "I don't know how your laws work in England but here we have a very good reason for them. Those that break the rules are punished accordingly."
I sighed. "Look, I know that he's a massive pain in the ass and that he's more trouble than he's worth, but Newt has only ever cared about one thing. Those creatures in his case. He would break every law in this world for them. He was at the park not to cause trouble but to save his animals. To – "
"Destroy public property?" she posed, cutting me off. "He has to face his crimes."
I shook my head, taking hold of the top of the case. "I won't let you take him in."
Tina pulled on it, but I only tugged back. "Give me the case and I won't tell them about your involvement," she attempted.
If she went to MACUSA and told them that I was wrapped up in this, I would surely be taken off the Obscurus case, and would perhaps even find myself unemployed when they inevitably shipped me back to London. That was, if I wasn't imprisoned first.
"Look Miss Goldstein, we don't each other that well and I understand what it means to be a woman in the magical world and the muggle one at that. We are underestimated, given jobs less than men simply because we were born female. I have been trying to become an Auror for almost two decades and so this, this is my only chance to be that," I paused, grip tightening on the case, "but Newt is family and there is nothing I wouldn't give up for family. So, go ahead and tell them, but I will not let you take this case."
Before the woman could answer me, the air around us turned cold and a blanket of darkness seemed to fall across the tops of the buildings. It was magical and the feeling that washed over me as it carried on overhead was something all too familiar.
"The Obscurus," I breathed.
Without realising it, I had let go of the case. I found my hand empty and Tina having completely disappeared. "Shit," I cursed, breaking into a jog and hurrying to turn the corner on the main street.
The darkness had faded, moving past where I had stood and now, I could see the figures on the road. There weren't many, it being incredibly late, but those that were out seemed to be smiling in the dim lights. The hadn't noticed the blanket of darkness. Muggles.
I couldn't spot Tina, not even a small glimpse of her coat or the case she carried. I had to get to her before she could make it to the President. I had to stop her, even if it cost me my career.
I took out my wand, not caring for who saw me as I prepared to apparate. Tina seemed to be walking and so if I travelled the quicker way, I might be able to get there before her.
That was when I heard it. A loud sob. I faltered slightly, dropping my wand slowly and turning around. "Hello?" I called out.
There was a small alleyway between the two large buildings I stood beside and if I squinted hard enough, I could see a figure hunched over and sat against the brick.
