The death of Alonzo had resulted in an uproar in the underworld. Killed in a mugging gone wrong. Marco had dumped his body in a street somewhere in the city. Made sure it looked real before he came back home. Georgino had become the new mafia king. I had been in the meeting with all the capos his father and they had accepted him as their new leader. There wouldn't be a bloody power struggle. Georgino made Aurelio his right hand but kept the rest of the positions the same. It had only been a few weeks, but I could already feel a change in the family. We were still strong and cunning but calmer. People were more at ease within the family without Alonzo's constant threat of violence or punishment.
My mom had practically adopted Rose and Salvatore. Whenever I went home to check on her, which she hated, Rose had always been around. My mom had adjusted better than I thought. I think it helped that she had killed to protect me. I hadn't slept in my room though. The blood was gone, thanks to Mario, but I was with Georgino all day anyway, so there was no need to go home to sleep. I liked his huge studio on the highest floor of the main house. Usually, the mafia leader moved into a villa, but he decided to stay here and leave the villa empty until he knew what he should do with it.
Georgino and I had started this annoying habit that even if we were already in bed, we were still working on our laptops. I had started to help with the finances of the business. I know, I can't believe how adult that sounded too. Georgino was typing on his laptop, and I finally decided to ask the question that had been on my mind since that night. Because even if we were great together, there was this underlying feeling. "Are you angry because of my mom?" He stopped typing. "No. She protected you when I couldn't." His eyes were still fixated on his computer though. "Then why are you angry?" "I'm not." "You are." He gritted his teeth and put his laptop away. "Fine! Yes, I am angry. At you." "At me? What did I do?" "You. Laid. On. Top. Of. Me." He paused at every word as if it cost him a great deal of constraint to not yell. "How can you be so suicidal?!" He snapped. I knew he would have a problem with that. "I won't apologize for protecting you." He shook his head. "I'd rather I die than have you take a bullet." "Same here." I challenged and we stared at each other. Battling this out by who would cave first. "Don't ever do that shit again." I won. He tried to look threatening, but I gave him a quick kiss. "No promises." He slung one arm around me and pushed me on the mattress. "Why am I in love with an idiot?" "Those words deeply wounded me. I think I'm in need of some kisses to get over it." Georgino smiled. "Kisses, huh?" I nodded and slung my arms around his neck. He leaned down and kissed the living daylights out of me. But we never went farther than kissing. "Not yet." Georgino had whispered in my ear once when I tried to undo his belt. And I had obliged because not yet didn't mean never. But it started to feel like an eternity away.
"I don't know what her problem is." I looked up from excel sheets to see Mario ranting in my office chair. "Whose?" He glared at me. "Didn't you listen to me before?!" I pointed at the never-ending numbers on my laptop. "No, Mario. I was to get some work done." He narrowed his eyes at me. "What crawled up your ass and died?" "Nothing." I just missed Georgino. He had been running around like the hounds of hell were after him. One meeting after another. Talking, discussing making deals. "Fine, whatever. And I was talking about Marco and that girl he went on a date with." "Tara?" Pretty, studying medicine and liked going on runs. I had met her briefly when she picked him up for a date. "Yeah, her." I don't think he could look anymore disgusted. "She told Marco that she didn't want me to go with them to the movies tomorrow." "She is his girlfriend." I deadpanned but that was the wrong thing to say. Mario's whole body went stiff. "He has never asked her to be his girlfriend." Over my dead body, was what he didn't add but I could see it on his face. "You are taking your possessiveness over Marco to a very high level." "I am not." "You are. I'm just asking myself why?" Dangerous territory. Lethal even. "Do you have a question for me Matteo?" I bit my lip to keep me from smirking. "Should I have one?" Mario scoffed and grabbed his hoodie from my desk. "I'll go now before I punch you in your face. And I will buy all the cinema seats just to ruin their night." He had the money and the craziness to do it. He had already closed the door when I shouted after him: "You are acting like a little pscho!" No answer, but I knew he heard me.
I gave up on the numbers soon after that and went upstairs to cook. It was eight and my stomach was grumbling. When I reached the kitchen in Georgino's studio, I found him already chopping vegetables. "You always know when the perfect time to cook is." I gave him a warm smile. He turned around, grinning back at me. "I can't let my favourite person go hungry." I chuckled and stepped closer to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist and rested my head on his shoulder. After I ate half of the food while Georgino was still cooking, we set the table we sat down to eat and talk about our day. Georgino got quiet all the sudden, a serious expression on his face. "You know," he started, "I've been thinking about us." Curiously I looked up at him. "What is it?" He absentmindedly caressed my hand. "I never really asked you to be my boyfriend and we were together for over 2 years." My heart set out a beat. "Yeah, you never did." Georgino looked up at me from under his eyelashes and the slightly nervous but cocky smile put my brain in shambles. "Matteo. Do you want to be my boyfriend?" A smile broke out on my face. "Try and stop me." He kissed me and as corny as it sounded, it felt even better than all the other kisses. "Boyfriend." I whispered and grinned. "I like it." Our eyes locked and our lips met in a gentle kiss. It was a moment of pure bliss. As the kiss deepened it felt like the electricity between us intensified. I nearly threw over my wine glass in my attempt to get closer to my boyfriend. Georgino laughed and pulled me into his lap. His lips on mine again in a second. "This kind of felt like a proposal." I hugged him closer, trailing tiny kisses along his jaw. He grabbed my chin and tilted my head upwards again. "Boyfriends first. Husbands later." The kiss that followed left me breathless and wanting more. So much more. And I got it...
I woke up the next day on cloud seven. Everything was great. I even went into the 'Budgeting and Planning' Meeting even though I thought about skipping it for the last few days. But it probably was important. Ugh, when had I become such a corporate person? The other night I had giggled at a corporate meme. Not even my mom thought it was funny and she for a company unlike me-. I worked for a crime family. My family but still. I was a bit surprised when I went to the one of the only good meeting rooms we had, to see everyone already present. I usually was early. And why was Georgino here? And the capos? They usually were never in meetings. "Oh great, you are here babe." Shock sluiced through me. I stared at Georgino who smiled at me. There were 7 other capos in this room. They weren't deaf. They heard. It must have been a slip of his tongue; he only called me babe when we were alone. I decided to ignore it. "Hello." I said in a weird, strangled voice. I grabbed the chair right in front of me, but Georgino pointed to the chair on his left. "Sit next to me. I missed you today." Was this what a heart attack felt like? One of the capos hid a smirk behind his fist. I grabbed my notebook tighter and held it in front of me like a shield. I slowly walked around the table to stand next to Georgino. His eyes had a mischievous gleam in them. He took the chair and waited until I sat down before he pushed the chair closer to the table. I blushed and kept my eyes trained on my notebook. What was happening? The meeting started but I couldn't concentrate on anything. I needed some water. I reached to the middle of the table, but Georgino was faster and gave me a water bottle. He winked at me when I took his out of his hand. It somehow felt way more inappropriate than it . My face felt like it was on fire.
"My boyfriend can show you the numbers on this." I choked on my water. Everyone in the room started laughing. "Boyfriend?" I nearly yelled and tried to dry my papers with the sleeve of my shirt. "I asked you last night." Georgino said as if he was talking about the weather and not outing himself in front of his men. "And you said yes, remember?" Oh, that fucking asshole. That amazing, loving asshole. "I did but-." I stared wide eyed at the capos. Georgino understood. "I told you I wouldn't hide you anymore. I won't break that promise. It took me the last few weeks to keep the fall out minimal, but I did it. For us." I looked around the room, expecting to see judgment or disapproval from the capos, but instead, I was met with smirks and knowing glances. It seemed they were more amused by our little love drama than disgusted by it. "We are the ones that don't have a problem with you two." One of them said when I was still sitting in my seat, too shocked to say anything. "Georgino got rid of the other 3." My head flew back to him. "I love you," I blurted out, unable to contain my emotions any longer. This was everything I had ever dreamed of. Georgino smiled, a soft and genuine expression that made my heart soar. "I love you too."
