I knocked on Spock's door for a third time as firmly as I could. The loud raps still got no response from the Vulcan who I assumed was still asleep. He was a half hour late, which was unusual for him, so Kirk sent me to go get him.
"Why me?" I had asked out of curiosity.
The captain had shrugged. "You're a doctor. If he's sick or something, you might be needed anyway."
So here I was. And my three sets of knocks, respectfully spaced out of course, still hadn't roused Spock. So, I used my PADD to open his door with my medical emergency clearance. The door slid open and I was met with a dark, quiet room. My heart clenched nervously. Turning on the dim light setting, I stepped inside.
One glance around the room told me that he was indeed still in bed. I pressed my lips together, uncertain that I wanted to wake him myself. That could get very awkward. With how nervous I usually was around the logical man, I didn't know if more awkwardness was a good idea. Unfortunately, orders were orders.
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to the side of his bed. He was mostly under the blankets with just his arms and head sticking out. His normally pristine hair was a wreck from what had probably been a rough night of sleep and his eyebrows were slightly furrowed. I hesitated a moment, soaking in the scene before me that I'd probably never get to witness again. Then, after tucking it away in my memory, I sat down on the edge of the bed, like I would to carefully wake a patient, and lightly shook his shoulder.
"Sir," I tried to speak normally, but had to clear my throat to get my voice to work. "Spock, sir, you have to wake up."
He stirred silently, but didn't wake up. I grinned, a terrible idea forming in my mind. Just like I had done with my niece when babysitting her, I gently pressed a kiss to his forehead. My heart pounded as I did and I was certain my cheeks burned red. But how could I not take this perfect opportunity? It wasn't every day a girl got to kiss her crush without him knowing!
Sitting back up, I went back to my method of shaking his shoulders. He stirred more, just barely opening his eyes for a moment. Then, to my surprise, his arms reached over and pulled me down onto the bed next to him and his face nuzzled into the crook of my neck. I squeaked in surprise, unsure of what to do now. The only think I could think to do was continue to try and wake him up.
"Spock, wake up, sir," I said in a louder voice, shaking his arm awkwardly.
At that moment, he jolted awake. He instantly released me, making a disgruntled sound as he realized what had happened. I quickly stood up, my back facing him as I tried to calm my pulse and my blush.
"Lieutenant Conners," He greeted. His morning voice was a touch deeper and scratchier, and he cleared his throat to try and fix it.
I turned slowly to find him sitting up in his bed, his own face tinged green. He was blushing, too. Taking a quick breath, I nodded my greeting.
"Kirk sent me to wake you, sir. You're forty five minutes late and he wanted to make sure you weren't sick," I explained, clasping my hands in front of me nervously.
"I am healthy, Lieutenant. My apologies for oversleeping. I had immense difficulty falling asleep last night and it must've affected my internal schedule," He informed me in his no nonsense way.
I nodded. "I'll let the captain know and we'll hopefully see you on the bridge soon!"
"Of course," He nodded.
With my usual parting smile, I turned and headed back towards the door. I only made it a few steps when his voice stopped me mid-step.
"Lieutenant Conners," He spoke those first two words in a rush and I turned back to look at him. "I hope I did not make you too uncomfortable with the actions I performed while still partially asleep. Please know that I didn't mean to discomfort you in any way."
"I know that, sir. You probably didn't even know it was me." I laughed a little, trying to lighten the mood.
"No, Lieutenant, I was aware it was you. Or at least my subconscious was aware of it."
His blush returned and mine was quick to follow.
"Well, sir, it, uh," I paused to find my words. "It didn't make me uncomfortable. You just surprised me, s'all."
He climbed out of his bed and began making it as he spoke the next words that flummoxed me. "I suppose that makes us even, then."
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying not to look at his nice black pajama set that looked like it might be satin or something like that. They were definitely pajamas that I could imagine cuddling up to- and we're stopping that thought right there!
"Your kiss. It took me by surprise, as well." He stated, bringing his gaze to mine for a moment. His eyes held a look that almost looked like teasing to me!
I blushed yet again and shrugged apologetically. "Guess we're even."
He nodded once before turning to make his way to the bathroom. I spun on my heels and quickly exited his room. Once in the hallway, though, I had to pause to register what had just happened.
He had just flirted with me. Odin's beard, Spock had flirted with me! I let out a small laugh before heading back to the bridge.
It was going to be an interesting day!
