Danielle's POV

Today is my 19th birthday. All I really wanted was a small gathering with my close friends—a quiet evening, nothing too crazy. But Minji had other plans. She begged me to throw a big party, insisting it would be "epic." To try and shut the idea down, I told my parents, thinking they'd definitely say no. But to my surprise, they didn't seem to care at all.

"Sure, darling," they said casually, like it was no big deal. I even made sure to explain that there would be a bunch of rowdy teenagers dancing in their living room, probably spilling drinks and causing a scene. All they said was, "Just keep our bedroom off-limits and make sure the house is clean before we get back."

That was it. With my parents' approval, Minji went wild. She invited the entire school—literally everyone—and to make matters worse, she told people they could each bring someone from outside of school. The thought of how out-of-control this could get made my stomach churn, but it was too late to stop it.

Next came the shopping trip for my birthday outfit. I had picked out this beautiful pink gown that felt perfect—classy and elegant. But Hanni had other ideas. She told me that since it's my 19th birthday, I needed to "go bold" and show a little skin. Before I knew it, she had picked out this short, skimpy blue dress that barely covered anything. I had to keep tugging it down every few seconds to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. As if that wasn't enough, she also bought me a tiara and a sash that screamed Birthday Girl.

I hated it. And slowly, I was starting to hate this whole party.

When the night arrived, the house was packed. The music was blaring, people were spilling drinks, and the air was thick with the smells of alcohol, sweat, and cheap perfume. The noise was deafening, and the once clean, cozy living room now felt like a crowded club. This was the last thing I wanted for my birthday. What I had imagined was a fun, intimate evening with my friends. Instead, I got chaos.

The only reason I went along with any of this was the hope that Y/N might show up. I've had a crush on Y/N since we were kids. Back in grade school, she was the girl who played with all the boys at recess, no matter what they were doing—basketball, soccer, racing. She was right there, always in the thick of it, and the thing was, she was better than most of them. Y/N always had at least two bandaids on her knees or elbows, and I thought she looked tough, fearless even.

Every time I saw her, my heart would race. I didn't understand it then, but now I know it was a crush. She was just... different. Confident. Cool. And that confidence drew me to her in ways I couldn't explain.

When Minji told me she invited the whole school, I was furious at first. But then I realized Y/N might actually come. I didn't want to stop the party, not if there was a chance of seeing her. But as I looked around the crowded room, I felt my hope slowly fading. It was getting late, and there was still no sign of her.

By now, it was almost 1 a.m. I was exhausted and so over this party. I was ready to stop the music and kick everyone out so I could finally go to bed. But just as I was about to, the doorbell rang.

Who could that be at this hour? I thought, irritated as I made my way to the door, stumbling a little in my heels. My dress kept riding up, and I tugged it down, annoyed.

When I opened the door, my breath caught in my throat. There she was. Y/N.

She looked just as effortlessly cool as always, standing in the doorway with a small gift bag in her hand. Her smile was soft, almost teasing, as her eyes took me in.

"H-Hi," I stammered, feeling my cheeks flush as I adjusted my tiara, suddenly very aware of how ridiculous I must look in this short dress and sash.

"Hey," she said, her voice smooth as ever. "Happy birthday, Dani." She handed me the gift bag, her eyes locking with mine for a second that felt like forever. "I hope you like it."
