Dayton couldn't understand why the lights needed to be so bright. He thought to himself about how Dick Cavett was much more uptight in person than he'd suspected. Now that the cameras were rolling, the man had become a perfect angel that gave out cute little pet names like 'songbird'. Maybe the boy's dissatisfaction derived from the fact that the host wasn't as interested in him as he was in Janis, but the one thing Dayton could give him was that his smile was just as charming in real life as it was on television.

That's why he began to pick at his nails as he sat on the sofa, attempting to distract himself as Dick made a few less than subtle passes at his girl. The audience was still reeling off of the most recent of the older man's flimsy jokes, Janis, who sat between the two, accidentally bumping Dayton in the shoulder as she laughed along.

But then, after what felt like ages, Dick finally addressed a question to the dirty blond teen.

"So, Dante, I hear you're releasing a record this coming week." He grinned, reveling in the eruption of laughter that resulted from his malapropism.

Dayton forced a shy smile, not wanting to look like he couldn't take a lighthearted joke, although it did get to him a bit.

"Well, it's both me and my band, actually." He started, sitting up. "We're called Flying Spur. It comes out in six or so days."

"Six or so? Is it six or seven? Which is it?" The suited man smirked. Dayton hated the burn that he felt in his throat whenever Dick addressed him. He knew he was only joking, and that this was his job, but it bothered him so much. One might have guessed that Dick was starting to pick up on this, though, as he spoke again.

"I'm only kidding, Dayton. Gee, you're a riot." The man smiled sweetly, leaning over both his desk and Janis to give the boy a playful swat on the arm. The vocalist looked over her shoulder at her boyfriend and smiled, which Dayton returned, before she whipped her feathered head back around to face the host with her cheek rested in her hand.

They ran through a few more drab questions, Dayton spending the whole time wondering what he looked like on TV. Would it make his eyes darker, his hair fluffier — could his little moles and freckles still be seen?

Eventually the interview portion was over, and both he and Janis took to the stage to preform a few songs for the uncharacteristically young crowd. It was obvious that they we all fans of Janis, each of them singing and jumping, wildly whooping and hollering along.
