—————————————————————The following day conveniently enough ushered in the weekend, although the Snapes were given no great luxuries on their first day of respite from the work week.
Early Saturday morning, Severus and Lily arrived at Malfoy Manor, ready to begin the Dark Lord's preparations for yet another act of villainy.
Voldemort was a cruel master, what could have easily been a lovely morning spent cuddling in bed had turned into a merciless slap in the face as the Snapes were forced to wake and ready themselves before first light.
Having the mansion solely to themselves and the Malfoys, Severus and Lily obediently listened to Voldemort's unending monologue.
Across the heavy table in the dining room, Lucius and Narcissa forced their eyes to stay open while the Dark Lord reminded them all of what would be and who would be responsible for what.
Regardless of the dire straits they were in, sleep remained a seductive mistress to Lucius.
Roused from his bed hours before he usually woke, as Voldemort rattled on about his own greatness and how wonderful his latest idea was, Lucius found himself succumbing to the warmth of his robes as the early morning chill tormented his bones.
His eyelids grew heavy.
Heavier.........
He blinked to try and stay awake but as they closed and his body relaxed, he realized his fate had already been sealed.
Voldemort started to turn his head.
Lucius's execution was all but assured until a sudden bang rang out.
"What was that?" Lily, er, Laima, frowned.
Footsteps sounded down the hallway before the doors to the Malfoys' elegant dining room swung open and let Draco walk in along with-
"HARRIET!" Lily exclaimed.
Severus's mouth dropped open as he watched his wife stand and all but throw herself at their daughter for a tight hug as soon as she entered the room.
Silently, Severus counted back the ten long weeks that had passed since the last time he had seen his eldest child.
As he recalled Voldemort's wild claim, his dark eyes moved to Harriet's unchanged abdomen.
Once he found no visible swell, he sat quietly and patiently waited to hear what would come next just as Lily finally let go.
"Ah, our dear Harriet.......and young Draco!" Voldemort quipped as he gandered at the young couple. "I have not seen either of you since our last meeting....Should you not both be at the castle?...........At Hogwarts?" He sneered, "What brings you here instead?"
"Forgive us, my lord," Draco began with a low bow, "My fiancé hasn't been feeling well and that useless healer at school has been no help at all. I've brought her home to seek better care."
A shark-like grin crossed Voldemort's thin lips as he gazed at Harriet and Draco as if they were prey he considered consuming.
Severus and Lily looked on nervously.
Lucius and Narcissa blinked.
"..........How very wise of you, Draco!" Voldemort exclaimed as he clapped Draco on the back with his rough palm, "A smart man, like your father, aren't you?" He kept his wicked grin as he turned to Harriet and asked with an almost uncharacteristic sweetness dripping from his sinister voice, "Harriet........dear, sweet, strong-willed Harriet, I'm amazed our Draco could manage to drag you back! Why don't you go make yourself comfortable in one of the rooms? I'll send only the best to look after you!"
