the cleanout
Hard rain beats down against the windshield as I drove to the Cullen's house, my Elliott Smith cassette struggling to be heard over the outside noise. My gut told me this visit was a mistake, that I could wait until graduation to see Edward again without it being suspicious, my inner monologue convinced me of all the ways this visit could go wrong. But I had not spent time with Alice for a few weeks, and she was blowing up my phone with calls, begging me to free her from the mundane house. I know that if Jasper was still around to keep her company, she wouldn't be as insistent that I visit, that it was his absence driving her crazy. And that was part of why I did decide to make the drive, beneath my warning gut, guilt was pitted in my stomach, continuously reminding me that he'd strayed from the Cullen family due to the incident in September.
Alice was perched on the front steps, under the covering roof as I pulled up in front of their house. Warm lights spilled out into the gray and I caught a glimpse of her sister, Rosalie, glaring down on me. She had the strongest opinions about me joining the Cullen family when autumn came, and when Esme or Carlisle weren't scolding her about it, she vocally brandished both Edward and me. As if I wanted to join the immortal coven.
"I'm so glad you finally decided to show your face again, I've missed you." Alice smiles as I hurry up the front steps, out of the cold spring rain, and onto the dry veranda. Her voice turns into a whisper, a futile attempt at being discrete as she speaks to me again. "They're growing annoyed by me, Rose never wants to go shopping anymore and Edward is too hung up over you and how obsessed he is with you, and then there's Emmett. And well, you know how Emmett is. He doesn't provide the entertainment I crave."
"And I do?" I ask as she opens the front door for me and we step into the warm interior.
"You suffice." I roll my eyes and pull off my rain jacket, hanging it on the coat rack before turning back to her. "Don't worry, I sent loverboy away. I didn't want him disturbing girl time."
Guiltily, I let out a sigh as we climb the many flights of stairs in the house to the top floor where the bedroom she once shared with Jasper is located. The room is messier than usual, clothes are thrown around haphazardly as I clear space off the bed so that I can sit, and the mattress creaks under the newly added weight as I shift around trying to find comfort.
"Shit, and I thought my room was messy." I laugh as she picks up a shiny piece of clothing and then throws it into another pile.
"I've been trying to organize my clothing collection, my wardrobe is overflowing and Carlisle told me he doesn't want to rent a moving truck just for my clothes when we move back to Alaska." She explains, "That's why you're here. A lot of these clothes don't even fit me, I just bought them because I convinced myself I needed them. And you will need more clothes once we go to Alaska, you are an outfit repeater."
"Not all of us are the daughters of a billionaire, or have psychic visions of the stock market." I remind her, "So excuse me for my limited wardrobe."
"Well, that'll all change soon. Once you're a vampire, we're going to have so much fun together. I can already see it, we'll jet set around the world, go wherever we want, and do whatever we want. There won't be anyone in the world who has nearly as much fun as you and I will."
