the hike
Hissing, I let the pocket knife prick at my skin, a small stream of blood flowing as I move from tree to tree around the clearing, leaving enough of my scent to help send the newborns into a frenzy. Alice, and oddly enough, Jacob, stand in the middle of the clearing waiting for me to finish.
Once I've wiped and cleaned the blood up, I rejoin the two with an odd anxiety. They haven't spoken a word more than what was necessary to each other since Jacob arrived at the clearing after Alice and I. We hope to distract the newborns with the spots of blood, masking my scent with Jacob's and taking me up into the peaks. Far away from the chaos and violence, in a little tent stuck with Edward. My version of hell, currently.
"Will that be enough?" I ask Alice as Jacob takes my backpack from me, slinging the floral bag over his shoulders. I bite back a giggle, it almost looks like child's bag on his broad back.
"Should be. But don't worry about that, you just have to worry about surviving the night with Edward." She says, almost wincing at the end.
This morning when I had packed, I spent it wondering how the night would go for us. When we'd first planned this to keep me away from Victoria, it made sense and even a little lucky. A night with my boyfriend, in the middle of nowhere with a projected snowstorm, a time to get nice and cozy. But now, I was preparing to turn into an ice cube by the end of the night.
"Ready?" Jacob asks, offering me his arms. We'd tested different methods for the hike, and we'd determined that bridal style was most comfortable... but the most awkward.
"Yeah, ready." Shaking my head, and praying Bella would never know about this, I let him pick me up. I wrap my arms around his neck and try to stay as physically far away from him as I can.
"See you tomorrow." Alice calls out as Jacob heads through the forest, up to the mountain slopes.
For a while, he just carries me in silence, the pace varying depending on the terrain. Sometimes it's a slow walk, and others he's jogging. And I can't help but smirk wondering how Edward views the whole thing.
"So you and Sparkles, are you like actually over or is this a phase?" He asks, and I laugh at the nickname. It was painfully suiting for Edward and the type of thing he'd get worked up over.
"It's the type of thing you have to take day by day." I say, a laugh still in my voice. "Why do you ask? Has Bella been telling juicy lies?"
"No, no. I heard from Quil who heard from Jared who heard from Teresa." Of course it was because of Teresa he found out. She and Jay haven't been able to shut up about it since I called and told them I'd broken Edward's heart.
