Chapter - 2

"What!" Sera told him to calm down and tell her what happened.

"I heard the boss saying that they will transfer you to some backward areas of California"

"Oh", replied Sera with a smooth forehead.

"What oh? Shouldn't you be angry? Everyone is aware that they are envious of your success and want to send you away".

Sera put her hand on his shoulder and calmed him down. With a gentle smile, she told him that people call her a wondrous researcher because of her ability to discover something from a least expected place and this time also she will do her best to keep up with the title even in the forests of California. He asked her to take him together but she teased him to stay here and learn more instead of roaming in forests.

After a while there was an official notice on the board of the research lab, she was transferred for 6 months which was, as far, the longest time assigned to someone. Sera was the most-liked employee and everyone was unhappy about her sudden transfer but she was cheering everyone by saying that this is only a holiday trip for her and she will be back soon.

After a long flight, she landed in California. As expected, it was a blazing hot day, the sun was shining high and the road looked like a boiling pan.

"Maybe, it's not that good", she was slightly regretting her decision of not fighting back.

She took a taxi and told him the address. When she reached there, she was stunned as it was a shabby house in a deserted place and nothing to see. She checked her phone and there was no signal.

"Arghhhhh...someone just put that damn boss here", she shouted but in vain as for 6 months, she had to endure it. She got in the house and didn't even bother to unpack as it is better to keep it packed in case she will run back home. She was roaming around the house, though it was small enough to require a few steps to complete. Someone knocked on her door, she was surprised as it can either be a ghost or the god at the door. She opened the door and there was a lady with a tray in her hand. She looks like a local in that area.

"I heard some researcher is going to come here, so I will prepare something to eat", she said while handing the tray to Sera.

"Thank god! I thought I have to live on air"

"If you need anything, then you can just contact us. We all gather at the riverside, just a few steps away from here"

"Okay, I will. Thank you once again". Sera closed the door and after her lunch, she took a nap for a while.

In the evening, she heard some noise from outside and looked out, children were playing with each other, men gathering wood from forests and women humming and singing, taking pots to fill from the river. Finally, after a while, she felt a sense of living in that deserted place.

"Maybe, it's not that bad", she smiled gently and looked up at the evening sky of summer.

"Chica! Come down to fill water", a lady called her. She went out and they asked her to bring some utensils to fill the water from the river as there is no regular water supply here. She searched the house and found a pot to take with her. On the way, she told them that her name is Sera, not Chica. They all laughed and she got confused. One lady explained that in Spanish they call a girl 'Chica'.

They reached the river shore and the ladies talked among themselves about the extremely hot weather which results in low water levels.

"This time it's record-break summers"

"And if something happens in the forest that it will be worst"

"Don't worry that boy in black told us that he will take care of things".
