Chapter 18

Oooh, I just noticed something...Kara's name for some reason keeps switching between Lumina and Lamina. Possibly autocorrect since I mainly type on my phone. Don't worry, I will stick to one name, and fix the rest in editing when I finish the story. So sorry about that 😅. Anyway, on with the story.

The computer has been whirring away analyzing the diary page, for the past few hours.

You are able to get some food and an OTC pain reliever in you. If the computer doesn't find something soon, you might take a nap on Abigail's couch.

"Ben, we've been looking at this for hours, and still nothing. Are you sure there's something?" Riley asks, removing his glasses so he can rub his tired eyelids.

This is when you decide to go get a (non-alcoholic) drink from the kitchen.

In the kitchen, you get a glass of water. You set the glass on the marble island countertop and pull off Riley's jacket. You wince as you do that, and push up the sleeve that covers the bandages.

Your graze isn't infected from what you can tell, it's just pretty tender. To fight infection, you still put on a new bandage.

"What happened to you?" Abigail asks, walking into the kitchen.

"Bullet grazed me. Got it on my last mission." You explain.

"Aw, you poor thing. There's a first aid kit over the fridge if you need it."

"Thank you, but I just changed the dressing."

"Would you at least like some candy?"

"Abigail, I'm not four..." You say with a grin, "But yes, I would like some candy."

Abigail gets a mixed bag of candy out of a cabinet and sets it on the island between you and her.

"Help yourself,"

You reach into the bag and pull out your favorite kind of candy.

"How did your mission go? Well, from what you can tell me."

"Let's see..." You say thoughtfully, as you unwrap the candy. "I was in the South American jungle and went into this cave filled with booby traps. So, basically, like a dungeon crawling type of videogame. And when I got to what I was looking for, Kara Lamina showed up."

"Oooh, that's not good."

"A fight ensued and, well, it came down to a standoff, and I think I won. "

"So what was the treasure?"

"I," you think for a moment then say, "I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I might know after my people analyze it." You finish eating the piece and go for another.

Abigail eats a piece of candy too.

"Right, what else happened?"

"Uh, tore my back up kinda badly before I went on the mission."

"How did that happen?"

You take a bite of the candy. "Jumped from an over thirty-story tall building onto a lower down roof."

"No way!" She exclaims, "I'm surprised you didn't die."

"I am too. I honestly didn't plan for the lower roof, but it worked out."

"Is that why you're not wearing your white hoodie?"

"Yeah, it got mangled up when I rolled on impact." You examine the sleeve of Riley's jacket, the bullet has it. There is a ruler-straight line cut through it. But the damage on the jacket may have saved your life.

Gonna need to patch that. You think, taking another piece of candy from the bag.

"What happened with you?" You ask, really wanting to change the subject, but you don't want to bring Riley into it. He's a great guy and all, but right now, it's nice talking to another female and it not be about guys or relationships.

"I got a promotion at work, so now I'm head of my department."

"I'm happy for you." You say with a smile, unwrapping and eating the piece.

"Thank you, y/n. It means a lot to me."

Right then Riley sticks his head in through the kitchen doorway. "Hey, we found something."

You toss your wrappers, grab his jacket, and head back to the computer.

Abigail is at the computer talking with Ben when you get in the room.

"Hey, what's this?" Abigail asks, pointing at a brown mark on an aged piece of paper, on the screen.

"Looks like a smudge." Ben says.

You switch on Eagle Vision. You can see what looks like letters but they're reversed. Also, they're together in words that don't make much sense.

"Residual ink from the from the other page. Flip it, the letters are backwards." Abigail says, as her and Ben crowd the keyboard.

Riley comes in close giving you a side hug. His arm slides around your waist.

You switch off your Eagle Vision.

"Got a text from William. He's wondering if I'd like to go on a mission as part of a dive team." Riley whispers in your ear.

"What'd you say?" You whisper back, sliding an arm around him.

"I asked if you could come with me. He said he'd message you."

"I'll check my phone in a bit. But I'll go with you if he'll let me."

"It's a cipher." Ben says.

"Yes it is,"  Riley says, in his normal voice. "And I can tell what kind it is."

"How so?"

"I took a class online. Had a free weekend."

You fight the smile that's trying to work itself across your face.

"Right," Riley says, picking up a pencil and pointing its eraser end towards the screen. "See how these letters are coupled? Playfair ciphers encode letters in pairs."

"Judging by the page, we need a five-letter keyword." Ben says.

"What's the keyword?" You ask.

"No idea."

"Well, it's gotta be logical. Let's start from the beginning. A is for Aardvark."

You embrace the smile, now You're trying to hold back a laugh.

"B is for Boat."

While Riley plays Search a Word, you take a seat on the couch and check your phone messages. True to his word, you're in a group chat with him and William.

William: I asked Riley about going on a mission as part of a dive team. He said he wouldn't if you couldn't go with him.

You: I'm fine going. It looks like it'll take a while for the group to crack the Booth Diary cipher anyway.

Riley: Just hit several walls with it, this is gonna take some time. I'll get a printout and work on it when I have some downtime.

William: I'll give you more info when you get back to HQ.

You & Riley: Yes sir.
