It is officially new years and my parents have thrown a party. There are a lot of business partners here but the Hans are here so that's really all I care about. Minji and I are in my old room, away from everyone because we needed to escape.
"I can't believe this will be another year without having anyone to kiss at 12." I say and Minji nods in agreement.
"I wish our parents weren't so strict, we might actually have normal lives, you know?" Minji says and we hear Sunghoon let out a sigh.
"I can't believe this is how I'm spending my new years." Sunghoon says and I roll my eyes. It's been about 5 days of living with Sunghoon and, just as I thought, it's not easy.
"Oh sorry, do you have somewhere else to be? A girlfriend to hang out with or something? Oh, right, you don't. At least you're getting paid to be here." I say and he flashes a fake smile then rolls his eyes at me.
"How about we make use of this time instead of bickering?" Minji says, shrugging her shoulders. Sunghoon suddenly taps the earpiece meaning someone is talking to him.
"Your fathers say they want both of you down there talking to your future business partners and customers." Sunghoon says and taps his earpiece again. Minji and I both suck our teeth at the same time. We stand up and walk out of the room, Sunghoon following. At this point, since Minji and I are together all the time, Sunghoon is both of our bodyguards.
"Oh, here is my lovely daughter!" My father says as we ascend the stairs. A couple around my parents' age looks at me with a smile. I smile back, walking towards them. I bow at them and they nod in approval.
"Good evening, are you enjoying the party?" I ask.
"Why, yes! It is a lovely party." The woman says, delight present on her face.
After some small talk with some of the guests about the business and future partnerships, I meet back with Minji. She's talking to some people I haven't really made conversation with yet.
"Oh! And is this the Song's daughter?" A man says and I nod, giving them a bow.
"And who is this young man behind you?" A woman asks, the question taking me by surprise before I remember it's Sunghoon she's talking about.
"Oh, This is Mr. Park, he's my personal bodyguard." I say, looking at Sunghoon and he gives a small bow out of respect.
"Well, it was nice speaking with you all tonight. Ahra and I look forward to working with you in the future, enjoy the rest of the night." Minji says, wrapping up the conversation. Minji and I give a small bow as a goodbye before walking to the kitchen.
"Gosh, thank goodness you came when you did, they started asking me if I've been looking for sutures for marriage." Minji says, rolling her eyes while I laugh.
"Some of the people were asking me the same thing. One woman said 'It would be a shame if you didn't have a husband by your side soon to help you run the company'. The internalized misogyny is insane." I say and Minji just nods in agreement. We continue to eat snacks and talk until we hear a bunch of commotion.
"Oh crap! It's 11:50." Minji says and we pour ourselves glasses of sparkling cider.
"Sunghoon, you need a glass too. You drink it at 12." I say and he just shakes his head.
"Umm, yeah. Come on, just take it." I say, handing him the glass and running off to the living room where everyone is watching the count down on the TV. There are still 8 minutes and everyone is getting excited. I'm not that excited but I am excited for what the new year brings.
Finally, 30 seconds..... 20 seconds...... 10 seconds.
"9! 8! 7! 6! 5! 4! 3! 2! 1, HAPPY NEW YEAR!" We all shout and drink our drinks. I look over at Sunghoon but he's just staring at me.
