Chapter 29: Difference Between a Psychopath and a Sociopath

Int. Café Leblanc – Morning

The date is now Monday, July 19th, and Makoto is sitting next to Akira, on his bed, checking her phone.

Akira Kurusu: Did you sleep, alright?

Makoto Niijima: I did. I'm sorry for staying the night, again. I didn't realize I was so tired. I already texted my sister last night and said I would travel with you to school today. Is that alright?

Akira Kurusu: Yeah, not a problem.

Makoto notices that she's gotten a new text from her sister.

Makoto Niijima: Hm, what's this?

Makoto reads the text to herself. Morgana is stretching out on the couch.

Morgana: Damn, this female should sleep over more. I love having this couch to myself!

Makoto Niijima: Oh my God, that's horrible.

Akira Kurusu: Huh, what happened?

Makoto Niijima: Sis texted me that the little girl Akechi was visiting at the hospital passed away last night. From what I've heard, Akechi really cared about her.

Akira Kurusu: Really? He's mentioned her, before. That's rough...the guy's probably hurting pretty bad, right now.

Makoto Niijima: I...don't really know too much about it, except from what my sister has told me. Apparently, it started off as charity work but, after a while, I think the two of them just became...friends. I think Akechi really cared about her. That's sad. I feel really bad for him. Is it okay if I text him real quick, before we head to school?

Akira Kurusu: Yeah, of course. Take your time. I'll go feed Morgana.

Morgana: HELL YEAH, YOU WILL! YOUR BOY IS STARVING OVER HERE!

Akira gets off of his mattress to go feed Morgana while Makoto texts Akechi.

Int. Akechi's Apartment – Moments Later

Akechi is sitting on the kitchen floor, with his back against a wall. The apartment is completely dark because all of the blinds are shut. His phone vibrates and he, briefly, looks over at it. Akechi is holding the envelope with his name on it that he obtained from the nurse. The envelope still hasn't been opened. He checks his phone and sees that the text is from Makoto. He thinks about responding but chooses not to and places the phone on the kitchen floor, next to him.

Int. Shujin Academy – Later

Akira is walking Makoto to her classroom and some of the other students in the school are watching the two of them. Makoto speaks, quietly.

Makoto Niijima: Why are they staring?

Akira Kurusu: They're probably just surprised to see you with a guy. Don't let it get to you.

Makoto Niijima: It's not...getting to me. I'm just not used to all of this attention.

Akira and Makoto stop outside of her classroom. Makoto stands by the classroom, awkwardly.

Makoto Niijima: Uh...here we are. S-Should we...hug or something? Or...is that PDA? I don't want to get in trouble or...

Akira kisses Makoto on her cheek, before she can finish.

Akira Kurusu: You're going to see Kaneshiro, after school, right? Promise me you'll be safe, okay? If you need anything or change your mind about me coming, just text me. I'll have my phone on me.
