Int. Car – Evening
The following scene is the same flashback that was shown earlier in the screenplay, of a younger Makoto sitting in the passenger's seat of her father's police cruiser. She smiles up at her father, innocently.
Int. Fuchu Prison – After School
Makoto is sitting inside of the visitation area of Fuchu Prison, in front of Kaneshiro, with glass still between them. She still has the phone, to talk to him, in her hand. She puts the phone back up to her ear, to continue speaking to him. Makoto struggles to speak.
Makoto Niijima: I...want to forgive you so...badly...everyone says that I need to, in order to move on...and I do forgive you for what you did to me...but...
Kaneshiro looks at Makoto, strangely.
Int. Car – Evening
The scene is, once again, the flashback of a younger Makoto sitting inside of her father's car in the passenger's seat. The scene plays out, differently, this time. Makoto looks up at her father, sadly, and she isn't smiling.
Makoto's Father: This world is going to absolute fucking shit. WHO THE FUCK DO THEY THINK I AM?! THEY THINK THEY CAN JUST THROW ME OUT LIKE YESTERDAY'S TRASH! AFTER ALL I'VE DONE FOR THEM! IT'S FUCKING BULLSHIT!
Makoto's father takes a sip of alcohol from his flask as Makoto looks at him, worriedly.
Makoto's Father: They...just don't understand. How could they? All of the cops and investigators at the station...they all think that if they do everything by the book, "justice will prevail." Fucking justice...what a bunch of bullshit. They need to take a good look around; crime rates aren't going down...murders are still taking place, daily...WHERE THE FUCK IS THE JUSTICE, EXACTLY?! True justice can't be obtained, without bending a few rules...nobody seems to get that! In order to protect the innocent, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes!
Makoto speaks, nervously, to her father.
Makoto Niijima: Dad?
Makoto's Father: Makoto, you understand where I'm coming from, right? Everything that I do...is to make the world safer for you and your sister. That's the only thing that matters! But, for some fucking reason, Sae just doesn't get it! That just means it's up to you...if something happens to me, Makoto, I need you to keep your sister safe...DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! Your sister doesn't have it in her but I know you do!
Makoto Niijima: Dad, I...don't think you should be drinking while...
Makoto's father backhands Makoto across her face, not letting her finish. Makoto's father shouts at his daughter.
Makoto's Father: DON'T FUCKING LECTURE ME! I HEAR THAT SHIT FROM EVERYONE ELSE! JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO WHAT I'M SAYING! IT'S IMPORTANT! IN ORDER TO OBTAIN TRUE JUSTICE IN THIS FUCKED UP WORLD AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO PROTECT YOUR SISTER AND KEEP HER SAFE, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! People will look down on you...hell, they might call you a monster but, in the end, you will save more people than you hurt. I promise.
Makoto starts crying in the passenger's seat while her father continues to drink and drive.
Int. Fuchu Prison – After School
The scene is back in the present, inside of Fuchu Prison. Makoto's hand start's shaking and Kaneshiro takes notice of this. Kaneshiro speaks, worriedly.
Junya Kaneshiro: Are...are you, alright?
Makoto Niijima: Do you mind if I tell you a quick story?
