Even though it's been exactly a year, I can still remember it like it was yesterday. The day my life changed forever. Even after all this time I still have no idea why she would throw everything away in one day. I'm sure she had her reasons, but my heart still breaks a bit every time I find something that reminds me of her. Every time I see the color gold, mallowmelt, or even a bird, I still think of her. Still think of how much I wish she hadn't left.
It's not even like I could talk to any of my family or friends about it. My mom and dad probably couldn't care less, not that mine and mommy dearest relationship was the kind we talked about the girls I liked anyway. And my friends wouldn't understand, sure they missed her, but they weren't there the day before she chose to leave. Their hearts didn't break nearly as much when she announced to the collective and council she was going back.
It was a Tuesday morning when she hailed all of us to come to Havenfield, saying she had something she had to say.
---
"Oh my God! Shut up," I yelled over to my imparter. And obviously it didn't stop ringing so I made a not-so-pleasant noise before rolling over and grabbing it at 7:00 IN THE MORNING ON A SATURDAY.
My mood changed after I saw who it was though,
"I know I'm irresistible, but 7? Really? You couldn't wait another hour or two, Foster?"
"Keefe, I need you to come over in 30 minutes. All of you. It's urgent." Said Sophie. If I wasn't awake then, I was now.
The smirk had been wiped off my face when I saw hers, "Is everything okay?"
She couldn't even look at me when she answered, "It doesn't matter. I just need you guys to come over."
"Sophie, it always matters if you're okay. Please tell me what happened."
"You'll see when you get here."
I tried to protest but she hung up before I was even able to get a word in.
"Trouble in paradise?" Asked Ro, who was standing in a corner in his room, sharpening her nails with a dagger.
I scowled at her, "You gotta stop doing that."
"Why?" She asked. "I'm so good at it."
I rolled my eyes before getting up to get ready to head over to Foster's. I was never nervous before going over to her house, but this time was different.
I stepped into the house at exactly 7:30, meaning I was right on time. By the time I was there it seemed like half of the Elvin population was too. There was the entire council, the collective, all our friends, and of course Grady and Edaline. But Foster was no where to be seen. So I took a seat in between Fitz and Biana who had a bit of space between them on the couch.
"Hey, do you know what's going on?" Asked Fitz
"No clue. That's what I've been trying to figure out."
"Yeah she was fine yesterday morning when I saw her," Said Biana.
"Yeah, same with last night. Perfectly normal." I said.
I felt Fitz give me a weird look when I said I saw her last night, but I didn't care. All I cared about was that she was okay.
I saw her first. She walked into the living room, puffy eyes and everything. Not that she didn't look beautiful, she just didn't look okay.
"Thanks for coming. I have something to say, and I don't think any of you are going to like it." I looked at her long enough that she looked back at me and only me. I tried to ask her with my expression, what was going on? But all she did was look up, like if she was trying to fight her tears.
