I was on cloud nine during that time with Cronus. He made me feel so calm, and yet so wild at the same time. Our bodies were pressed together and our legs were tangled up together. It was heaven.
Then Majesty bursted through the door, a frantic look on her face.
"I overheard Silas talking to the police just now. It's not safe here anymore. The police are searching the houses of anyone who has a connection with Kankri, and the first place they're checking is his boyfriend's house."
A feeling of dread shot through my chest like a bullet. My head started spinning and I sat up, pulling away from Cronus.
"Then where am I supposed to go?" I asked.
"I don't know where, exactly," she replied. "Disguise yourself and take my car somewhere far away, out of town, maybe even out of state. Hide somewhere with a lot of people."
Cronus nodded on my behalf and practically leaped out of bed, running to his closet. "Woulda been nice to know this sooner... How long till the cops get here?"
"Less than five minutes."
"Got it."
I got out of the bed and started changing into Cronus's clothes that he had picked out for me. They were a little baggy, but hey, that's the style in some places. He went over to his mirror and desk and picked up a bottle of hair gel and squirted some into his hand, using it to gel up my hair and comb it back to the best of his ability in a short amount of time. Then he grabbed a gray beanie from nearby and put it over my new hairstyle. Majesty had a pair of sunglasses ready and I threw on a gray hoodie as well as the glasses, then looked at myself in the mirror.
"Do I need different shoes?"
Cronus shook his head. "Black Converse are generic enough."
"Right. Thank you both for your help in this." I grabbed my phone to keep contact with them and stuck it in the hoodie pocket.
"It's not a problem, Kankri. Call us if you need anything."
We stood there for about half a second, then all went in for a group hug.
"I am going to miss you all so much. I really can't thank you enough."
Cronus kissed my head one last time.
"Goodbye, Cr-"
"No. Not goodbye. I'll see you later, alright?"
"Alright. See you later," I said, even though in the back of my mind I knew that it was probably not true.
By then, Orpheus had come in through the door to see me off. He handed me the keys to the car and patted my back. "Good luck out there, son."
"Thank you, sir."
We all headed downstairs. Majesty went first, then me, then Cronus, then Orpheus. I just about ran into her back when she stopped suddenly at the bottom of the stairs.
"They're already here," she whispered in horror, watching two burly police officers through the window as they walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell.
Orpheus pushed past us on the stairs and beckoned for us to go back up them and wait in Cronus's room. "Get out the back door as soon as you get a chance," he whispered to me before going and opening the front door. The rest of us hurried up the rest of the stairs as quickly and quietly as we could.
We waited in Cronus's room in dead silence and Majesty watched through a crack in the door as Orpheus led the officers through the front room and into the kitchen as they explained why they were here. She whispered to Cronus and I where they were and beckoned for me to come closer. I tiptoed over to the door and peeked out. We could hear Orpheus lead the police downstairs to the basement.
"Now's our chance!" Majesty whisper-yelled.
"Farewell, Cronus."
"G'bye, chief."
I took in a deep breath before exiting the room, quickly tiptoeing down the stairs with Majesty at my heels. She ushered me out the back sliding glass doors which opened way too loudly for comfort. Based on the sounds coming from downstairs, the officers heard us.
"Now run! Get outta here!" Majesty practically shoved me out the door, following me out herself to see me off. I gripped the car keys in my hand and sprinted around to the front yard, quickly getting into the car and putting the keys in the ignition, then driving away.
I thought about how I had no idea where I was going, and how I would probably never see them again, and how I would never get to feel Cronus's presence, or stand next to him and say I do. I thought about how scared and worried my dad and brother would be, and how I never even got to say goodbye to Karkat.
I cried.
