“And now he’s come back for me.” I finished, never once looking up from my hands. I slowly looked up to find Daniel staring intently at me. He remained silent for the whole story and I could only assume he is furious with me for not telling him. I closed my eyes and took a big gulp of air.
“Daniel, he scares me. I can’t go with him. I know I should’ve told you the moment you found me. I just couldn’t bring myself to speak of him fearing that he would show up the moment I did. Please forgive me.” I opened my eyes to see his expressionless face. I held back a sob knowing that I probably just ruined the greatest friendship I’ve ever had. I slowly stood up before realizing that the sun was peeking over the horizon.
“Oh no.” I muttered. The Duke. I sprinted over to my horse, who had wandered off somewhere during my story, and jumped on. I didn’t even bother to explain to Daniel why I was rushing away. I can’t believe I was so foolish. Why did I not pay attention to the time? I growled in frustration and clicked my ankles against Lady, pleading her to speed up. I led her to my window, not even bothering to put her in her stable, and quickly dismounted. Looking up I saw that the rope was still there, meaning no one had been in to remove it. I laughed to myself, pleased that I was not busted. I rubbed my hands together getting ready for the hard part; climbing the rope. Normally Daniel always climbed behind me to make sure I didn’t fall, but I’m pretty sure he won’t be around to do that anymore. I grabbed the rope and put all my weight on my arms. I then put my feet on the wall itself to walk up it. Thankfully, I reached my window without any incidents. The house was still dark as I climbed through my window. I turned to shut it behind me, looking out it one last time.
“Did you enjoy your morning?” I cringed at the voice coming from behind me. I whipped around to find the Duke laying on my bed, glaring at me with intensity.
“Good Duke! What are you doing here at this hour?” I questioned nervously. He shook his head at me and stood up swiftly.
“I think to correct question is, what were you doing out at this hour?” My mind was brewing up a storm trying to think of a believable reason.
“I was getting a little nervous about the wedding, so I thought I would do for a ride. You know, to clear my head.” I patted myself on the back, thinking that was a great cover-up. “Now if you’ll excuse me Duke,” I said walking over to him, “I need to get prepared for the busy day we have ahead of us. I’m going to have to ask you to leave. If you see Mary on the way out, tell her I'm ready for my bath.” I put my hand on his shoulder to guide him to the door, but before it got there he took it and slammed my back against the nearest wall. He pinned my arms above my head, his own shaking with anger.
“You were with that boy again, weren’t you?” I didn’t answer him, but instead glared at him. This made his anger burst through all the shields he had put up. He pulled me forward and pushed my back even harder against the wall. I whimpered quietly, not wanting to show him the pain he caused.
“What did I tell you? I told you that you couldn’t see him. You told me you wouldn’t, but here I find that all this time you have been sneaking out under my very nose. You lied to me, Emery. And I don’t tolerate lying.” I couldn’t take him being this close to me, so I did the one thing I know how to do best. I spit in his face. He moved back and wiped the spit off his face giving me the opportunity to escape. I didn’t get very far though when I felt myself being thrown onto my bed. He was over me in a matter of seconds putting his hand over my mouth to block my screams. He used his legs to pin me down as his other hand roamed over my face roughly.
“You see, I’m not a jealous man.” He began, his voice getting harsher as he spoke. “I just don’t like other people touching my things!” By the end he was screaming and shaking everywhere. He blinked a few times then looked at me smiling.
“Understand? Darling.” He hissed out the last word. I slowly nodded and him feeling a wave of fear wash over me.
“Good.” He removed his hand from my mouth and stood up slowly. He moved over to the rope that was tied to my bed post, untied it, and then walked over to my fireplace. He looked at me in the eyes before throwing it in.
“I know this won’t stop you, so this is only a warning. You will stop seeing him or it may be him that will burn in the fire.” He grinned at me sadistically.
“Be ready in an hour. I’m feeling like a picnic, how about you?” He then walked to the door and opened it. He turned around to face me and a sad look crossed his face.
“I’ve already lost one wife. I refuse to lose another.” He looked at me one last time before closing the door loudly. I laid there, not wanting to believe what just happened. He had never touched me like that before. I sat up slowly, letting all the things that had happened sink in. First I learn that my pirate is back, then Daniel won’t talk to me, and now the Duke. I hugged my knees to my chest and did something I’ve been doing a lot of lately. I cried.
