Midnight Mayhem

All I wanted was a good night's sleep. Hardly an unreasonable request for someone who had been working as hard as I had that day. I had been awake for over 18 hours. From dawn till dusk I worked nonstop. Before the sun had even risen I had gone out on horseback along with a bunch of other soldiers to deliver supplies to one of our outposts. The trip there and back had taken 10 hours. However my day didn't end after the long trip because I still had to muck out the stables, participate in a meeting and I had to help out with a training session that evening. Surely it is understandable as to why I desperately needed some rest. I had managed to fall asleep until I awoke to the sound of someone crashing through my window...

"Who comes flying through a window in the middle of the night?" I whisper yelled to avoid waking the rest of the soldiers in the barrack, although they probably woke up from the noise of the glass shattering. I hadn't even sat up to see who it was when something else came through the now broken window. The karambit lodged itself into the wall opposite the window, where Ciara suddenly materialised. "What are you doing breaking windows at this hour?" I asked her ,while getting out of bed. "I didn't break the window and I am following him." She explained. I looked around the room but I couldn't see anyone else. "How much have you had to drink?" I asked assuming she was drunk. "If you are thinking I am drunk then you are wrong because I have only had a glass of wine and I..." she replied before I interrupted as I was too exhausted to hear any of her explanations. "Well clearly one glass is too much for you because you're the only other person in my room. No one else apart from yourself came through that ..." I was cut short by someone strangling me with the flat edge of a cold blade. At least this is what I thought it was as I couldn't see what it was. 'Looks like I might end up resting permanently.' I thought to myself.

Ciara reacted quickly sending a karambit just past my ear. The assassin released his hold allowing me to regain my breath. I was trying to process what just happened, when my door opened by itself. "Thank you Ciara and I am sorry; you were right about someone being in my room." I said still in shock. "Never mind about that. There is a spy from the Nether using an invisibility potion who is now getting away!" She reminded me before running out the door after him. Regaining my senses, I rushed out the door to alert everyone of the emergency. "Everyone outside now! There's a spy who is using an invisibility potion." I ordered running outside to wake up everyone in the other barracks.

Soon there the peaceful nighttime city turned into a hectic scene. There were soldiers scattered around everywhere, all of whom were still in their pajamas, looking for an invisible intruder. The only ones who weren't in their pajamas were  Captain Azura and Lyria. I had bumped into them during my attempt to relocate the Ciara and hopefully the spy. "Officer Vimir do you know what's going on?" Captain Azura asked me. "A spy from the Nether was seen by Ciara before he used an invisibility potion. He tried getting away from her by breaking into my room, however Ciara was able to catch up by teleporting with her karambits. After Ciara alerted me of his presence, he tried to silence me to prevent me from raising the alarm. Luckily Ciara sent her karambit his way but he ran off before we could stop him." I explained to them. "Oh I see." Captain Azura said whilst thinking about what to do.

"Potions can last anywhere between 3-8 minutes but that is not very helpful because we do not know how many potions he has on him." She pointed out. "What if we dumped a lot of paint on him? Then we could see where he went by following the drops of paint that would fall off him." Lyria happily suggested. Captain Azura looked at Lyria sternly. "That would only work if we knew where he was and if we did then we would have probably caught him and therefore the paint would not be necessary." Captain Azura explained when suddenly an idea came into her head. "Captain Lyria, you have just given me a brilliant idea! If I can find Lady Stella then she can use a tracking spell to locate him." She said smiling. "An excellent idea. I will tell Lady Stella of your plan should I come across her before you." I said before we all parted ways to see if we could find either Lady Stella or the spy.

Having searched the area near the gatehouse, as that would be the most likely place someone would be if they wanted to escape being caught, I could not find the spy nor had I seen Lady Stella. I decided that the next place they would try that wasn't so heavily guarded was the frozen moat. The moat was not very safe to walk on as the ice isn't very thick in some places, although this was likely to be unknown to the outsider. Scouting around the edges of the moat, I was careful to avoid crossing onto the ice where possible. So far I had been rather fortunate that ice had held up when I had stepped on it in places. However the spy had not been so lucky, for I soon heard the ice break quite a bit of distance ahead of me. I ran as quickly as I dared, hoping I would not slip on the icy banks and fall into the moat myself. When I was close enough I saw Stella standing on the side of the bank in shock slightly. I was confused by her expression until I looked at a hole in the moat's icy cover and noticed a vast amount of steam coming from it. It only too few seconds for me to realise what just happened and by the looks of things a number of other people, who had just joined us, had come to the same conclusion. The Nether spy had been a blazekin, who had misjudged the thickness of the ice in his panic. He had met his end upon coming into contact with the freezing waters and even his protective magic or potions against the cold were not enough to save him.

Not wanting the deathly silence to last any longer I spoke up rather gravely. "I know I said I wanted to put an end to the intruder's spying but I didn't want to put an end to him." No one replied to this. It had been a rather chaotic time and so the sudden death had left everyone lost with what to do with ourselves. Perhaps we would still be standing there at sunrise if Lord Patrick had not ordered us to head back to our quarters and get some rest. I hoped that tomorrow was not going to be as eventful and that something like this would not happen again.
