"Stop." Evelyn tossed and turned though the screams wouldn't stop. "please" She whispered "STOP PLEASE" The whispers turned into screams.
"Hey, wake up" Steve shook the girl "it's just a dream, wake up" Evelyn shot up gasping for air "Evelyn..?" Steve stepped back, trying to scan her face.
Evelyn quickly jumped up running to the bathroom and locking the door without saying anything. The terrified look on her face made Steve feel so guilty.
"Evelyn, come out so i can help you." Steve softly knocked on the door "Go away Steve" Her raspy voice spoke sending a sharp pain in Steves chest
"Eve.. cmon we have to talk, This the fourth nightmare this week" Steve could hear the soft sobs through the door
"No, Steve, please just go away, i can't do this anymore." Evelyn sobbed "You're safe here Eve, He's gone" Evelyn felt like all the air in the room was gone, she felt like she was suffocating.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y unlock the door" she spoke softly. Once Steve heard the click of the door, he rushed in and pulled Evelyn close to him
"Every time i close my eyes, i see him staring at me" She cried into his chest "I know" Steve shushed her while rubbing her back. Evelyn sat up and looked at Steve, tears rolling down her cheeks
"What if he comes back, What if i become her again" Steve's heart sunk "He won't come back, I promise" Steve pulled her back into his chest
"I can't go through that again" Evelyn said softly "I know" Steve shushed her while rubbing her back. It hurt Steve so much to see his best friend in so much pain
"I'll keep you safe" Evelyn nudged closer in to his chest
The two sat there in comfortable silence for what felt like years until there was a knock on the door
"F.R.I.D.A.Y, who's at the door?" Steve spoke softly, trying not to startle Evelyn "It seems to be Ms Romanoff, shall I let her in?"
Evelyn sat up quickly wiping her tears "F.R.I.D.A.Y unlock the door" Natasha could feel the tension in the room. "uh, i can come back" Her eyes widened as she went to exit the room
"No it's fine nat" Evelyn gave her a forced smile "We have a mission" Steve gave Evelyn a "Are you sure" kind of look "I'll be fine" she gave him a reassuring nod
"Suit up" Natasha said as she walked out of the room "Are you absolutely sure you're ready for this mission?" Steve asked, his voice filled with concern. He didn't want to offend Evelyn, but with everything happening, he was genuinely worried that this might not be the best idea.
