Jungkook
“Jungkook, why is this still in ‘to be finalized’ status? The deadline for freezing the jacket design is tomorrow, and you haven’t yet decided what to do about it? I hope you remember that we have planned to release the cover design and the promotion schedule at midnight on Friday, which is just three days away.” Taehyung fumes, slamming a bunch of papers on the table and noisily seating himself on one of the chairs across my desk.“I was thinking we could just use a monotone scratchy background with the album title ‘Criss Cross’ printed at the center in bold letters. What do you think?” I raise my eyebrows at him, rubbing my chin with my forefinger.
“I think that idea sucks. Why do you not want to use that photo from the photoshoot? The other photos in that frame show your face, but the one that I suggested doesn’t show your face, and Haewon is still too small, so her face is going to keep changing. No one will recognize her, the picture has a personal touch to it as well, just like the songs in this album. It resonates well with the theme,” Taehyung lays out his reasons, but I’m still not fully in for it.
“You’re right. But those are not my reasons for not considering that picture to be on the cover.” I state plainly and lean back in my seat.
“Do you not trust my choice with the cover anymore?” He asks me, sounding a little agitated and maybe even a bit disappointed. I get it to an extent because he has been closely involved in every step of the making of each of my albums starting from my first till the latest.
I have always trusted his choice, and we share similar tastes, which makes it extremely easy for me to communicate my ideas to him. In turn, it simplifies his approach to the concept and helps him effectively break down the complex parts and work on the aesthetic aspects of the album.
“I do trust you, and you know it too. But that isn’t my reason as well,” I keep it short once again.
“May I know what it is then?” His tone turns serious, a little intimidating even.
“The permission part. The photographer… she’s a fan, and as you rightly pointed it out, we cannot use the image without telling her who I am. Do you think there’s any other way to do it without revealing my identity? Like you know, we could ask the PR manager to talk to her, telling her that they saw the picture on social media and then ask her permission to use that photo for the cover of Jake’s album. We don’t have to tell her that the person in the photo is Jake and that he and I are the same. We only need permission to use the photo that does not have a face,” I explain my idea clearly, and Taehyung sighs in frustration.
“Jungkook, your face isn’t your only identity. Why do you want to do it this way? I told you Hae-Yeon is trustworthy.” He insists, more firmly this time.
“But she’s also a fan. It will be a risk,” I stand my ground, and Taehyung hisses in an annoyed manner.
I continue, “Taehyung, you do know how hard it was to bring the situation under control whenever there was a risk of an identity breach in the past. And especially with Mina. It could very well happen again, but I’m never going to allow something like that again. I’m sorry if I’m not agreeing with you on this, but this is my decision.”
