Alice, Hugo and Aya all ran out of the door and down the corridor into the hall. Lia had stayed behind to grab her bracelets but she quickly arrived behind them. The five of them proceeded into the hall and were some of the last to arrive. All of the other students were already sat down, all of them looked identical in there outfits.
"see Hugo you won't look like a fool" Lia said to Hugo as they all sat down.
The hall was split into four parts all joined together by a circle in which the year groups were sat . Below them in a smaller circle was Alices year. It was like being on trial. The students surrounding the group of friends in the lower tier were a buzz with excitement, all speculating which element type they'd be and saying things like "oh i do hope we'll be together" or even "i recon that life will be one hundred times better with powers".
All at once a voice boomed from the back of the hall, "Quite!" the deep voice yelled. Everyone all at once ceased their talking. The voice belonged to a man, had dark, greasy black hair and wore a leather coat.
He seemed scary at first but as soon as he spoke more softly Alice felt a little safer "Sorry about that, now students new and old i welcome you to the sorting ceremony" He said before turning to the students in the circular pit beneath his podium.
"Momentarily you will be sorted into an elemental type, while you are here your elemental type will be all about your power and somewhat your personality however not all things are what they seem, but it will affect nothing else really" he said
"Now Miss Woolton would you assist me " he said, Miss Woolton seemed to appear from the edge of the pit, she waved her hand over the pit, steps made out of vines and other sorts of tropical plants appeared over the pit. Miss Woolton walked down these steps as if they were the sturdiest thing to ever exist. Alice found this sight a little shocking but half the things she'd seen today weren't at all normal, Alice had learnt this to now be the new normal.
Miss Woolton now stood beside the man on the high podium above them.
"shall we begin" Miss Woolton said to the other students which was met with many cheers of "yeah" and "come on". Miss Woolton read from the top scroll which she now held aloft in her hands.
"Coral Button" she called. A girl walked through the crowd towards the steps, she had short hair similar but not quite the same to Lia's. She had thick eyeliner and a top that seemed to be from some 80's rock band. She wore several bracelets mostly in black and purple colours.
"place your hands in the bowl" the man said. In front of them there was a bowl, the kind churches use for baptisms. Coral placed her hands in the bowl within seconds, little cloud appeared in her hands floating upward before dropping onto her head. Coral began to rise from the floor spinning and turning frantically but in an enjoyable way until she found herself in the yellow diamond at the top right side of the hall.
After a while student after student began to pass through, some getting a flame in there hands before it dropped on their heads some hair was dyed completely others just had streaks and some none at all. Some people would have the bowl fill with water and race up their arm changing their appearance as well. Others would have leaves or flowers grow on their arms or hair and then have their hair change or have a small tattoo appear above their eye or on their arm.
"Lia Blackwood" Miss Woolton called, Alice looked over to Lia stood beside her. She saw Lia walk of toward the bowl. A small part of Alice wished she may just be with her, she found Lia kind of fascinating. Lia put her hands into the bowl. Ice cubes formed within it their was many gasps in the hall as people saw this "oh my god she's a rare type" Lia's hair turned to a dark purple while her snake tattoo changed to the same colour. Lia threw a hand over toward the diamond at the top right corner of the hall, she walked up this ice shoot before waving her hand as the ice turned into snow falling on the rest of the remaining pupils below. Alice grinned a little but looked solemn as soon as the boy next to her sore. Alice hoped that she may be a water type and join Lia but part of her still hoped to be a fire type.
"Alice Brown" Miss Woolton called. Alice felt a pit of fear develop in her stomach, she walked over toward the stairs her legs shaking a little as if she hadn't eat in days, it was really more a stumble than a walk. Somehow she made it to the platform without falling over. Alice placed her shaking hands into the bowl. The man placed his hand on her shoulder "it's okay no one's judging you" he said. Alice breathed deeply. A ball of fire formed in her hand, she felt as if the power was streaming through her blood, she felt her blood become hotter as it flowed through her from her toes to her hair. Alice watched as the bowl as the flame died and a small, baby bird almost appeared from the dying flame.
"ah" Alice said a little surprised
"it a phoenix" Miss Woolton whispered in her ear, Alice grabbed the small bird out of the flame, the bird seemed to grow to a grand size and grabbed Alice by her hands before dropping her into the pit in the bottom left corner of the room and placing itself on the balcony beside her.
The rest of the ceremony was much the same. Aya was the same type as Alice, Hugo was an air type and Billy was as well. Alice was the only person to have an animal apart from a girl called Harry who had a baby dragon. This girl was quickly sat next to Alice, Alice thought she was kind and sweet perhaps they'd get along.
The ceremony finished and everyone was sent back to their dorm's, Lia went to drop of Hugo while Aya and Alice went back to their dorms. Aya conjured tea and Alice reluctantly took to drinking it.
"Lia's kind of cute" Aya said, Alice almost chocked on her tea
"uh, um, uh, right i-if you say so" Alice said a little flustered but not exactly sure why. Aya went to her room to grab something, while Alice sat drinking her tea not sure what to think. All of a sudden Aya screamed. Alice rushed into her room and it looked completely different.
"what happened!" Alice said confused
"I just touched the door handle and the room glowed and then and then well here we are" Aya said
"oh right" Alice said looking around. The room now had three large windows out looking onto the moorland. The bed room was surrounded by oak panelling which was painted with gold round the edges. The bed was of a grand size similar to that a a princess might have. The bed was near a grand fire place with the same red, gold style as the rest of the room. Alice turned to the grand mirror that stood next to the window.
"ahhhh" she screamed upon seeing her now changed appearance...
