Chapter 1: Friend or Foe?

~~~~~Luz~~~~~

"Eda!" I called before opening the front door, it was almost night out but I had to go back to the woods to confirm I had seen the creature correctly. "I'm going out for a late night run! I should be back in a few hours!"

"At this late at night!? Whatever you're doing must be very important kiddo..." Eda grumbled from the kitchen, I smiled with a chuckle but not before... "oh! And if your going into town don't forget to hide your wolf features!" I sighed, annoyed of how protective she was but it warmed my heart to know that she did care. "Don't worry! I'm not THAT reckless!" I said opening the door to be met with a sleeping Hooty, I slowly and quietly closed the door, shifted to my wolf form and took off for the woods.

~~~30 minutes later~~~
Where is it? I thought as I walked around, I was a little bit scared since it was now really dark but my wolf sight helped me see in the dark but what I didn't realize was that something was lurking above me, that was until I felt a sharp pain in my side, I yelped loudly to see what looked a tendril stabbed into my side I followed the tendril up to see a large beast I've never seen before I snarled but before I could do anything something flew over top at incredible speed. The beast whined and removed the tendril and tried to run away however as I lay on the ground I saw a dark purple figure with wings land on top of the beast pinning it to the ground. My vision began to get blurry but I swear I saw the beast that attacked me run away as the other looked at me before... before...

The wolf closed it eyes letting out a soft whine, wasting no time I shifted back to human form running to the wolf, picking it up and began heading to the only place I knew nearby... the Owl House...

After what felt like forever I got to the door to be met with a Hooty who was wide awake. "HOOT HOOT! Nikita! You're back! Wait- is that-?" Hooty screeched before I put my hand over his beak forgetting I still had my dragon claws out "Hooty hush! I don't want to meet that human yet! Is Eda home?" I said in a hushed tone looking up to what Eda and Hooty referred to as "Luz's room window" or something like that... I moved my hand off Hooty's beak to let him answer. "Hoot hoot! Yes she is-!" Before he could finish the door was thrown open showing a very annoyed and tired Owl Lady, she looked down at me with a glare and I swear to Titan I felt myself cowering but when she saw the wolf bleeding in my hands she moved out of the way. "Couch. NOW." She didn't need to tell me twice as I scurried over to the couch setting the wolf down. "Is there any idea of what did this?" Eda asked me, I turned and looked at her but before I could say anything she answered it herself, seemingly reading my expression. "The Beast again huh...?" I sighed and nodded my head, "The Beast" earned its nickname after it managed to grab me from the air, break all my legs- well... rather both my arms and my legs in my current form I guess... and was about to break one of my wings when Eda managed to scare it off, she took me in after finding out I was originally from the human realm... I don't remember much of the place since when me, my mother, and my sister moved to... a new town that I don't remember the name of I chose to run away because I thought I was being treated unfairly...

"Hello? Earth to Nikita?" Eda interrupted my thoughts waving her hand in my face snapping me back to reality. "Huh? Oh! Sorry! I got lost in my thoughts again..." I sighed before putting a hand on the wolf's side. "Uh huh... anyway! Can you explain why you haven't been home ever since Luz showed up?" This made me go stiff as I breathed in and seemed to hold my breath, I knew I couldn't avoid this question forever, may as well answer now... "well... I don't belong in humanity... I belong here that's been proven... last time I went back I almost caused a lot of families their lives... I'm not sure if this human was one of them and I don't want to take the chance that she is and make things awkward by living in the same house... but... I didn't necessarily run away? I've been up on the tower outside! King keeps me company, it's like he knows when I'm feeling the most upset or loneliest..." I said closing my eyes halfway through my explanation, when I opened them I saw Eda holding back tears.

Oh no... I just made things worse now! "S-Sorry... y-you asked and... I knew I c-couldn't avoid it f-forever and-" suddenly Eda was hugging me and crying on my head I froze as I was surprised by this action but I hugged her back and gently patted her back. "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to make you worry..." I said, before I heard Eda sniffle before she pulled away. "It's ok kiddo, you were doing what you thought was best for Luz and you!" Luz... where do I know that name from? King? No... he talks about the human before we play pretend... Eda...? No... why is the name so familiar?! I just shook my head. "No... Eda please don't talk like that... it makes it feel worse..." I said trying not to cry myself, I'm usually the type to hold back emotions unless reaching my breaking point but this was different...

I noticed Nikita trying not to cry so I began to rub his head, almost instantly he began to make the purring noise he makes when he is nice and comfortable. I looked back at Luz and saw that she was doing a bit better then looked at Nikita an idea popping off in my head. "Hey Nik, wanna watch over the wolf for the night?" He lifted his head up at me then looked at the wolf looking a bit distressed before sighing. "Yeah... yeah I would like to do that... I saved them... it's only fair I continue looking out for them..." I did my signature snort and laugh, or laugh and snort according to both Nikita and Luz... before patting his head. "I'm assuming King has been feeding you? Every morning he steals something from the cabinets or the... uh... I think Luz calls it a... "fridge"? And then he disappears for a bit..." Nikita looked up at me his dyed dark purple hair flopping over his left eye, he didn't answer but he smiled. "Dang... guess I better make better meals then? King usually returns with the food almost intact except for one bite!" Nikita just chuckled before yawning.

"Right it's late... I'll see you in the morning kiddo!" Nikita nodded his head and leaned back on the couch gently lifting the wolf up onto his lap and closed his eyes muttering: "night mom... night sis..." he paused for a moment and what he said next brought a big smile to my face. "Night Mother Owl..." I turned and walked away, he always said good night to others, wether they could hear him as well or not it didn't matter, but I'm pretty sure he wished Hooty a good nights rest I just shrugged it off and walked up to my room to go to sleep, passing Luz's room where King laid on her "sleeping bag" as she called it I stopped and gave him a small head pats before continuing my trip to my room where I fell asleep almost as soon as I was comfortable.

I hated pretending around Eda... it made me feel bad because with the way I pretended around Eda it was pretty much just lying... once I was sure she had gone to bed I looked at the wolf sleeping comfortably on my lap and began to gently pet it behind the ears as I sighed throwing my head back letting a few tears drop from my face. "Why must this be the only time I can show my true feelings? It hurts..." I began talking to no-one in particular when I heard a soft whine, I snapped my head up looking at the wolf, it was wide awake and staring at me with ears pinned back.

"Oh... um... I didn't realize you were awake..." I genuinely felt bad because I thought I had woken the wolf up! "Sorry... I'll just shut up and go to sleep..." I was surprised when the wolf shook its head and whined. I paused for a second, something about the wolf felt off as I stared into their eyes and they stared back. "I insist we go back to sleep..." I said at last before checking the clock, 12:39AM jeez... maybe I should've just shut up and went to sleep the first time... the wolf whines when seeing the time but seemed to notice I was tired which confused me a bit but curled up farther on my lap, almost to my stomach and began to fall asleep, I tapped the wall twice and the lights shut off. "Thanks Hoots..." I muttered before going to sleep

Hello! I'm new to Wattpad and this is my first story that I'm actually following through on! It may take a while because of school but I'm sure this will be a fun project! The next chapters will have two different languages, Russian and Spanish, I'm not great with either so there could be some mistakes! Hope you enjoyed part 1!
