"And that's how we came here" I finished explaining my journey here, from how my town was destroyed to how we killed archbishop Dedaim

"You've gone through a lot in the past month. It is regrettable what happened to Tlalil." Mested offered his condolences with a mug of ale in his hand. Though if I'm being honest, I cared little about the town itself.

"What about all of you? Are we really the only ones fighting against my father?" Mathra spoke

"There were more of us. Significantly more but..." Christa said, polishing her spear

"In the beginning there were 200 of us but the count has about 5 times that many troops, not to mention his mages. Most of us were knights of Ilhalis, the best of the best but even so our numbers depleted with each battle." Ralith said with a grim look on his face. The knights of Ilhalas are said to be a match against the famed king's silver knights. To lose so badly so quickly should speak volumes about the kind of power the count wields. Trying to fight him and his forces in open battle would be suicide.

"Then there was 20 of us, then 10 of us and now there are 4 of us. 6 if we include you two. We've just been engaging in guerrilla warfare as of late. The real problem are those mages, neither of us would stand a chance if we tried to best them in a fair fight." Mested said

"How many mages do they have?" I asked

"By our estimates there are 50 in total. 5 of them are stationed here, 20 of them are stationed at Gualmalon and the rest are elsewhere in the county" Mested promptly answered

"There may be a way to remove them from the equation however" Ralith said stroking his chin "They answer only to the count himself"

"So if we kill the count would stop trying to fight us. Is that what you're trying to say ?"

"Correct cut the head off the snake and-" Ralith was cut short by a loud bang coming from the door. Mested and Mathra drew their swords, Christa readied her spear while Ralith and I drew daggers.

There was a rush footsteps coming down the stairs and Trindus came forth " The count's soldiers are here! They're trying to break down the door. They'll be on us any second!"

"This is bad... bad indeed. Christa, position yourself in the middle and keep the enemy at bay with your spear. Trindus, Mested guard her flanks. Sorace, provide them support with your magic from here. In the meantime I shall get us ready to leave this place" Ralith ordered and the three former knights gathered round the bottom of the stairs swiftly and I placed myself a few metres behind them. Meanwhile, Ralith retreated behind the counter.

"What about I?" Mathra asked

"Stay out of danger and keep safe. All of this will be for naught if you die, Milord" Ralith answered

Mathra seemed uncomfortable with this and I could see why. Mathra is the kind of person who likes to put himself in danger in order to save others, that's just who he is. I know that many people died so that Mathra may live and he wishes to return that favour which he owes to those deceased. The idea of letting others put their lives on the line for him while he did nothing ate him from the inside. So he stood beside Trindus.
