10. I Need My Best Friend

Adley's POV
I'm training with both mom and dad right now in the institute so we can get prepared to get Engar and keep him away from our family. I can see dad grab his throwing stars in his pocket slowly and quietly so as soon as he flicks them near me I flip forward to him and land behind him.

"How did you know I was going to use those?" Dad asks me as they turn to me. "Because I know you" I tell him and they both smile proudly at me.

"Ok what am I going to do next?" He asks me and I know already, he's going to try and slide under me and trip me to test my balance. "Just do whatever it is and I'm sure I know it already." I let him and mom and dad look at each other. "She said go for it." Mom tells him and dad looks at me with a smile as he starts running but I stand still and he slides fast after he gets his momentum. I roll to my side just as he comes by me and I grab his arm and toss him up hard. Dad lands but looks at me in shock.

"Wow, that was amazing honey." Dad says to me with a smile and mom looks at me proudly with her arms crossed and her smile.

"You know most shadowhunters your age can't do some of the things you can do yet. That's how strong you are." Mom tells me

"She's right you know, some your age are still learning their flips even when you know all of the flips." Dad puts his hand on my arm and rubs it.

"They're right you know, you are a bad ass, Adley." I hear Josh say and I look up at the door and see him standing there so I run up to him and hug him. With everything going on lately I haven't had any time with him. "Wow, hey are you ok?" He asks me as he looks at me in the eyes.

"A lot is going on here." I inform him "Is it cool for me to be here than?" Josh asks mom and dad and they put away the training weapons.

"Stay Josh, she needs you buddy." Dad tells him and mom and dad hug me tight as they both kiss me on the forehead. They walk up to Josh and mom takes him in a hug. When they leave Josh hugs me tight and I hug him tighter, it feels good to be in my best friends arms, this is what I needed.

"So what do you want to do? We can walk around the city or get some coffee? Go to an art museum? All up to you" Josh allows me to choose and I smile at him.

"We can just hand out here. I'm too tired to leave." I admit to him because it's easier to tell him things and he smiles at me and takes my hand tight. "Whatever you need I'm here for you Adley Herondale-Lightwood." He is the only one who calls me by both names because I am both. We smile at each other and just chat in my room like we did when we were little.

"Can I see what you've been drawing lately? I always love looking at your art." Josh asks me as he looks at my art book on my desk. "Yeah, I've gotten a lot of my head onto it." I allow him and he grabs it and we sit on my bed beside each other as he flips through my drawings.

"You are crazy talented, woah, a lot of these are very dark. Well I get that for you. I'm happy that you can do this for yourself, as a breather from everything. I bet it helps the nightmares." Josh supports me and I smile and rest my head on his shoulder.

"It does, I can be free with it. Also it helps change up the nightmares in the drawing and make them whatever I want. They disappear after I draw. My mom taught me that drawing helps with pain." I say to Josh and I start to relax as he keeps flipping through. He stops at the last one and closes it as he puts it away and sits back with me and takes both my hands.

"Ad's look at me, close your eyes, now take a deep breath." I do as he says because sometimes I do need that reminder to relax my body. Josh helps me with that. "Better?" He asks me

"Much, thank you for always reminding me to do that. I really appreciate it" I say to him as I look him in the eyes. "I'm always there for you. Just like you there for me." Josh helps me more and he hugs me tight as he rubs my back and I just relax as I hug him. I really needed my best friend today.
