"FROM THE top!" lexi shouts, her voice bouncing off of the cement walls of the gymnasium.
it was the first official cheer practice of the year, and alexandria was losing patience, and quick.

for the most part, the practice was going decently considering this was the first time rehearsing with the new recruits of the squad.

but there was one thing, one person who was testing alex's kind nature.

catherine could not seem to grasp that she wasn't in fact the captain of the team.
every time they would mark the moves, catherine would change the routine just enough that it would throw the balance of the rest of the team off.

"stop! catherine, you missed a step there on the second eight count." lexi hit the stop button on the speaker.

"i just don't think it fits with the rest of the count. why don't we change it to a high-v approach?" the girl suggested for maybe the 4th time during the session.

"no. i'm not changing the beginning of the routine unless there's something actually wrong with it. besides, the high-v approach makes no sense for the beginning of the routine." lexi explained with the best politeness she could muster.

"sure thing, captain." catherine spoke the last word as if it were meant to be taken as an insult. she may have been reading too much into it, but it seemed like catherine were trying to suggest that lexi was unfit for the role she was given.

she ignored her theory and pressed play on the speaker again.

but before the routine could even start, catherine interrupted yet again.

"sorry, i just need some water." she spoke, making her way towards the bleacher behind them.

"you don't need any water, catherine. you had some 5 minutes ago and we haven't even done any real practice yet." lexi denied her.

"is this how your version of cheer practice goes? refusing to let your team hydrate themselves?" catherine spat, venom in her tone.

"come over here. everyone else mark the first 16 counts." alex spoke to the others on the team, starting the music up again and letting it play while she gestured catherine away from them.

"do we have a problem?" lexi asked the girl in front, who had a pretend innocence plastered on her face.

"no, no problem here!" she smiled.
she was hard work.

"okay, then i'd appreciate if you didn't question my captaincy in front of the team on your first day as a varsity cheerleader." lexi smiled back, the tension between the two girls rising.

"i just needed some water, i wasn't trying to do anything like that." catherine hit back, clinging onto her innocent act.

"just get your water and then once you're done, i don't want any more interruptions please." she explained before making her way back to everyone else.

"does anyone else need a water break?" lexi asked, to which she was met with the team shaking their head.
alex glared over at catherine, as if saying the rest of the team are ready to practice.

darci smirked. she loved when lexi put people in their place, and she was so good at it.

the rest of the practice went somewhat smoothly, and was soon over. everyone was piling out of the doors, ready to enjoy the end of their lunch break.

darci, madi and alexandria gathered their things and slowly made their way to the cafeteria.

"that catherine girl is really something." madi giggled, knowing lexi was started to become irritated by the girl.

"the way you glared at her was so funny bruh. i had to hold my laugh in." darci chucked as she spoke.

"i just don't understand what her problem is with me. as far as i know i haven't done anything. i think she's just—"

"—such a bitch!" catherine whined to chris, who was half listening as he scrolled through his phone.

catherine had spotted chris on the way to the cafeteria and stopped him before he got there.
she had asked him what alexandria's problem was.

"she's got a stick up her ass, that's what's wrong with her. she's just like that." chris put his phone in his pocket and leaned on the railing they were stood in front of outside.

"she literally hates me for no reason, she kept singling me out the whole time we were practicing." the girl continued to ramble until chris zoned out.

lexi doesn't like this girl for some reason, he thought to himself.

i could probably use this to my advantage. if i just bring this caitlin girl everywhere i go, it'll make lexi so mad that she won't be able to annoy me anymore.

"hey, do you wanna come to a party me and brothers are throwing?" chris interrupted catherine mid sentence, but she didn't seem to mind as she perked up at the mention of a party.

"a party? what's it for?" she asked.

"we throw one at the beginning of every school year. we usually invite all the cheerleaders anyway." he explained to her.

"yeah, sure! when is it?"

"it's next week. friday." he told her simply.

he knew this would get under lexi's skin. and now he was looking forward to the party more than usual, just to see her stupid face make that signature scowl.

then, the bell rang and catherine waved goodbye to chris and he walked to his next period.
