"Oh, for fuck's sake, Marly," Mary whined early on Saturday morning. "I told ya, I needed an extra hour of sleep toda'! Now turn that rubbish down before I deck you in the mouth!" Her Scottish roots shone clear in her accent and it made me chuckle.
Marlene was smoking a cigarette and flipping through all of her records playing Cher at a very high volume. "C'mon Mary, yer luv this song."
The year was coming to a close and I felt like I was missing out on something that hadn't even happened yet. Marlene and Alice were planning to see each other during the summer, Mary said her Mother had family near Wolverhampton which was very close to Cokeworth so she said they'd be able to visit Lily as well. I was the only one who seemed to be, of course, alone.
Once I was dressed, I made my way down for breakfast. "Good morning," I greeted James as I neared the portrait hole. "Do you know–"
"Remus is downstairs eating breakfast under a pile of books I'm sure both of you will find a use for." He barely looked up from his own textbook. "Go find your beau." He joked and smirked.
I scrunched my face up at him and he chuckled. "Oh, shut it, Potter."
I skipped down the steps and made my way to Remus. "G'morning," I hummed and caught his attention.
"Morning Lestrange," Remus grumbled.
I didn't even mind him using my surname. "What? Is it not 'good' anymore?" I teased and watched as he stretched all his limbs.
"No, I'm just–" a yawn interrupted his sentence– "tired." A smile grew on his face. "Tea?"
I scrunched up my face and nodded. "Yes."
He poured me a cup and I smiled. "Milk and sugar please." I reached across the table and served a plate of tomatoes and bacon, then I grabbed toast and slathered on the jam. Remus handed me the mug and I traded him for the paper. "Thank you," I chuckled. "Are you always up this early?" I asked.
"Sometimes," he answered casually. "But don't get me wrong, I love my sleep." He added without looking away from the story he was reading.
"Hmm..." I sat and ate my breakfast listening to a record one of the teachers must've put on sipping my tea and smiling at the thought of my plans for the day. Remus and I had planned out an entire day of studying and I hoped somewhere in there we could talk about the kiss but the last time I thought he was going to bring it up he made it sound like what I said before running out of the kitchen was true and we should just stay friends. I was definitely not thinking that but I didn't know what he wanted.
As I was taking the last bite of my tomatoes, Remus sighed. "Alright, enough of that. How are you?" Remus had put the paper down and looked up at me. "Sleep well?" He asked.
I chuckled and shrugged. "I haven't slept well in weeks," I said honestly.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe this will help lift your spirits." Remus turned to rummage around in his bag and pulled out a book with the oddest-looking cover. It was dark blue, actually more of an aegean with two eyes looking back at me. As he held it out to me, I expected them to blink or move somehow but when he opened his mouth I beat him to the punch.
