Max's POV:
The next day, I woke up on the sofa, feeling incredibly cozy and comfortable. I slowly opened my eyes and was met by the sight of Maya's body beneath me. Lando was cuddled up against Maya's back, while her front was facing me. Her arm was draped around my torso, and my hand lay around her shoulder. I couldn't help but feel a rush of butterflies in my stomach. Why am I feeling like this?
I tried to move my arm gently to avoid waking Maya, but she stirred and began to open her eyes. When she fully awoke and realized how we were positioned, she quickly removed her arm from around me and said, "Oh, I'm so sorry, didn't mean to cuddle you."
I smiled and replied, "It's fine, stuff like that happens."
I got up from the couch and noticed Maya trying to disentangle herself from Lando's grip. Lando was still sound asleep, not even budging when Maya got up. I felt an urge to bring up the topic from yesterday but decided to wait for the right moment.
I made my way to the kitchen and sat on one of the chairs. Maya soon joined me after coming out from the bathroom, offering, "There are extra toothbrushes in the toilet. I already laid them out on the counter for you guys."
I thanked her and went to the bathroom to freshen up. When I returned, I found Maya sitting on one of the kitchen chairs. Before I could say anything, she said, "I can't be bothered to make breakfast, so I'll just go to the bakery and get some croissants, sandwiches, and buy some orange juice. Do you want to come?"
I was pleased that she had asked me to join her and quickly agreed, saying, "Yeah, I can come with you." We both put on our shoes and headed for the door.
As we walked, I finally decided to address the lingering issue. "Can we maybe talk about the topic?" I asked, knowing Maya would understand what I meant.
Maya nodded in agreement, and I continued, "We used to be friends, Maya. Maybe not the best of friends, but you always made me feel comfortable. You never judged me, and we used to be cool. And then one day, you just stopped answering calls, talking to me on race weekends, and even stopped coming to the dinners with me, Charles, and Joris. I just want to know what happened."
Maya sighed and stopped walking. She said, "Listen, Max, I'll be completely honest with you. This was a few years ago. I was going to have lunch with Charles in the paddock, but he got bombarded with fans and interviews. So, I told him I'd keep walking and meet him there. I took another turn and saw you and one of your friends, or something. Anyways, I overheard you guys talking, and you were saying how I have an attitude, I'm using Charles for fame, and more. Not nice stuff. Anyways, I went home and even cried because that actually made me really sad. Why would you, of all people, think that about me?"
I was taken aback by her revelation. "What? I have never talked badly about you, Maya."
Maya sounded annoyed as she responded, "Are you saying I'm lying?"
I quickly clarified, "No, no, no, I'm not. I just don't recall that ever happening." Then, suddenly, I remembered what day and what conversation she was talking about. "Oh my god, Maya, no, I know what you're talking about, but that wasn't about you."
Confused, Maya asked, "What do you mean? Who was it about, then?"
I chuckled and explained, "We were talking about one of Charles' flings. He had brought her to the paddock the day before, and she was so rude to us. She acted like an angel when Charles was around, but when he left, she completely ignored us and was not very nice. We were talking about her Instagram followers and such."
Maya stood there, dumbfounded.
Maya's POV:
" what the actual fuck"
Max was full-on laughing by this point, and I just stood there feeling like the biggest idiot of the decade. I said, "No, no, Max, this is not funny. You're telling me I 'hated' you for nothing." He was smiling and answered, "Pretty much, yeah."
I wanted the ground to swallow me up because of the embarrassment I was feeling. "And you find this funny?" I asked.
Max replied, "Should I not?" I couldn't help but chuckle at that and said, "I'm really sorry, Max. It was stupid of me not to talk to you about it and just completely cut you out."
He answered, "It's fine, really. It was just a misunderstanding." Why is he so nice?
"No, it's not fine, Max. I've been a bitch to you for no reason, and I'm really, really sorry," I said sincerely.
He just said, "I forgive you, Maya. I haven't been the nicest either, so I apologize for my part." I smiled at him and opened my arms, offering a hug.
"Can I get a hug?" I asked, and Max hugged me back. It felt like hours with my head resting on his chest, and his heart was beating really fast. "Your heart is going crazy, Maxy," I teased.
He laughed and said, "Because I was really nervous about how this conversation was going to go, and please not the nicknames again."
I laughed and playfully replied, "Well, you're stuck with it now." He rolled his eyes in jest and said, "Well, we've got to find you one."
I agreed with a thoughtful hum. We detached from the hug, and I put my pinky finger out, saying, "Friends?" Max interlocked his pinky with mine and said, "Friends," with a warm smile.
Changing the topic, I said, "We have to go before they wake up all hangry and grumpy." We were already a few steps away from the bakery, so when we got in, I ordered some croissants, a few sandwiches, and a couple of smoothies. When I was about to pay, Max insisted on paying for it, and after a brief argument, I won. "I'm paying, next time," he said, brushing off my protests.
We walked back to the house, and everyone was awake. Lando noticed the newfound comfort between Max and me and asked, "So, you guys are friends now?"
Max looked at me with a warm smile and answered, "Yeah, we are."
Alex chimed in, "Thank God, I couldn't handle the awkwardness anymore." Everyone laughed, and we made our way to the kitchen to eat our breakfast and talk
