Day twenty-three: I should have paid him more attention. I love him.
I miss him.
"Calm down, honey, it will be okay," the operator said on the other side of the phone call. Gerard was a shaking mess. He was still in the kitchen, but now his hands were shaking. "Where is he?" he managed to choke out. "Where is my baby brother?"
He completely forgot about Mikey's room. That was the only problem. If only he had opened the door. "It will be okay. I promise it will be okay," the operator said, too calm for Gerard's liking. He heard the clicking of keys on the other line. The operator was typing something. "I need to tell you something," they said. They said a quiet "hmm" as they continued typing. "Mikey…" they said, probably too focused on the screen.
"Will he be okay?" Gerard asked, still panicked. "...Mikey? Where is MIkey?" he asked. Silence. The silence stretched out for what felt like hours. But it was only for a few seconds. Fifty-seven seconds to be exact. But the next words Gerard heard had dug into his brain. Made everything a blur for the next six months, thirteen days, eighteen hours, and three seconds. Made Gerard regret everything. Made him hang up on the operator just five seconds after the operator spoke. Made the next six months a crying mess. Made Gerard lose…everything.
"He killed himself."
