|Elena Beaumont|
With a heavy controlled sigh, I plopped onto the cushioned chair in front of Mom's desk right across from her. "I'm glad you realised we had to do this at some point," I remarked, adjusting my sitting position to my maximum comfort.
I'd been impatiently waiting for this conversation for nearly a fortnight, rehearsing my demands and escape door out of my hellhole of a marriage.
A couple of days had already passed since my fight with Sebastian and in that space of time I got in solitude, collecting my thoughts and fighting brutally to heal both physically and emotionally, I figured my freedom was a necessity and I was going to fight for it by hook or crook.
Mom's light sigh followed by intent scrutiny from above her reading glasses reported she wasn't comfortable having this conversation.
After all, she was my mother and knew just how difficult I could make things when I'd stubbornly set my mind to something.
"I seek peace and civilisation more than anything, Elena," she started with another controlled, soft sigh, "so kindly put that in your mind before we proceed with this difficult conversation."
My lips stretched into a fake smile as I leaned forward with my elbows anchored on the mahogany desk. "Mom, I desperately want a divorce and you know it. There's no need to complicate things and prolong a conversation we both don't need to have."
"A divorce is something we can't afford, Elena, and you know it," she reminded me intently, removing her reading glasses and placing them on her desk before refocusing her attention on me. "Please, don't make this much more difficult than it already is."
I expected that answer more than her agreement hence, I saved myself the energy to appear shocked or triggered.
"So I'm supposed to go back to Sebastian's house and pretend he didn't beat the shit out of me and will probably do it again if he decides my behaviour is too bitch for him?" I responded aggressively, the rage I'd contained within me threatening to leap out of my system and breathe fire.
"That house is equally yours as it is his, Elena," Mom emphasized, firmness lacing her voice. "That's how marriage works and the sooner you accept it the better."
"Mom," I charged fiercely. "That house is supposed to be his with Delilah, not me, and the sooner you accept that and understand we can never work out as a married couple, the better."
"Elena Beaumont, maybe if you'd agreed to meet him at least once these past few days, you'd realise he is not the monster you paint him out to be and maybe you'd be a better match for him than Delilah ever could be," Mom spoke authoritatively.
"Bring him anywhere close to me and I swear I'll turn into a fucking murderer in seconds," I warned madly.
"You had enough time to deal with all that rage and bitterness, young lady, and now it's time to wake up, face reality and deal with the situation at hand. Pride is a luxury we can't afford when we are at the losing end."
