Sebastian and I sat a comfortable distance apart on the park bench, an ice pack pressed to most of his face, but especially his nose.
His head dangled between his parted legs, his elbows anchored on his knees for support. He'd been in that position for nearly half an hour and I could swear I heard him sniffle a couple of times and his face seemed to redden.
I just sat there like an accessory, rubbing my knuckles slowly and bathing in the sun, thinking of how to leave without being too dickish.
Sebastian was broken, hurting and lonely even. I related to those feelings harder than anyone else could and dealing with it all by myself was the hardest part, knowing no one cared.
He was a grown-ass man and I could just leave him here all by himself, but he looked a little too homeless for a billionaire to abandon.
I was very angry with him and his choice of actions, yes, but the part of me that knew him before Delilah left kept me seated, hoping my presence did at least the bare minimum.
If his actions really were a call for help like he said, maybe what he needed all along was someone to listen to him, someone to care and be affectionate enough to help him deal with the anger, pain and frustration. Maybe all he needed was compassion.
None of those could come from me, obviously, because we just weren't that close anymore and it was fucking awkward and too out of character for both of us to show any sort of affection.
I still found myself scooting hesitantly towards him somehow, reaching out my hand to give him a gentle squeeze on the shoulder.
"Don't be fucking weird, Xavier," Sebastian grumbled, shrugging his shoulder.
I withdrew my hand swiftly, pushing further away from him in a robotic stance. So much for trying to play the good guy.
"Stop bawling like a baby then while I sit here like an idiot," I muttered under my breath.
I saw Sebastian sit up sharply from the corner of my eye. "Do you know what bawling like a child fucking looks like?" he glowered crossly.
I hesitantly turned to face him, cocking my brow when I saw how his eyes were red and nearly puffy. "A grumpy child at that," I said irritably.
Sebastian simply shook his head, folding his arms and sitting close to the edge of the bench with the back of his head leaning against the headrest. He closed his eyes as though soaking in the sun.
"I'm leaving," I announced, grabbing my jacket.
"Sit your ass down this instant," he grunted, eyeing me furiously.
"Fucking say what you want to say then otherwise I have better things to be doing," I replied daringly, crossing my right leg over my left knee and tilting my body to angled in his direction.
