"Come in, Sebastian."

I slowly pushed the door open, multiple thoughts floating through my mind. Maybe it was because I didn't expect her to still invite me in after realising I was the one knocking on her door, or I just knew I was getting a little too comfortable for someone who'd hurt her.

I stopped myself from walking in further, leaving the door wide open as I reflected more on my actions. I made her uncomfortable and it was an undeniable fact. Getting into her bedroom would be a big invasion of her privacy and I didn't want to take that big of a leap.

I was happy with the progress we were making in getting comfortable around each other and talking more often. I didn't want to ruin that.

"I don't exactly bite, you know," Elena's voice drew me back to reality.

I couldn't help but smile awkwardly out of embarrassment. I'd probably been standing there silently for too long, covering her in my field of vision. Getting this speechless and clueless around her was easily becoming habitual, and I couldn't pinpoint the reason why.

"Of course," I responded with a softer smile, guiding my feet inside towards her as she sat on the ottoman stool, "you don't."

She could be aggressive, feisty and highly defensive, a couple of things I'd learnt since I met her, but she wasn't the type to initiate violence for no proper reason.

She'd only react that way if I provoked her, a trigger prompting me to follow her eyes and read them as I approached her and sat next to her on the stool, leaving a decent gap between us.

She seemed comfortable and if anything, unfazed, yet I could feel my heart somersault and my nerves kick in.

A panicking effect was instant the moment I figured she was looking into my eyes as I followed hers and suddenly, I couldn't maintain eye contact.

I cast my eyes down slightly, averting them from her eyes while I took a deep controlled breath internally. I was never a shy or reserved kind of person. I could barely recognise myself these days and this was one of the qualities fuelling that feeling. Were these the effects of shame and guilt?

"I came to apologise to you in case I pissed you off," I mustered enough courage to say it without sounding pathetic.

I'd run into Ethan and ended up having quite a chat with him before he mentioned Elena's invite for a sleepover. I'd instantly agreed to it and went to their house to pick up Mason and Lucas before bringing them home.

I thought Elena would like the idea of having her brothers home and spending time with them. Joining them in the kitchen hadn't been on my bingo card, but when the twins insisted I joined them like we always used to, I couldn't turn them down.

That could have been something uncomfortable to walk into for Elena and I couldn't continue without her approval.

Elena slightly drew her brows together, her expression changing. "Why would you piss me off? Did you do something I wouldn't like?"
