|Elena Beaumont|
Cute giggles from across the house as I entered filled my heart with so much warmth I couldn't help but grin, my eyes keenly wandering to find the twins.
I wasn't the only one excited given Skye began barking too, waggling her tail and moving with extra enthusiasm.
Within a few seconds, Mason and Lucas came running towards me, their white clothes covered in multi-coloured paint with a few streaks on their cheeks.
I crouched, opening my arms to them and embracing them warmly the second they wrapped their arms around either of my sides.
My smile grew even wider, my heart full of love and a feeling of home. I hadn't seen them grow up to their current ages yet they still accepted me and had so much love for me. I loved them so much and appreciated their acceptance.
We pulled away from each other and Lucas instantly crouched to pet Skye.
"Hi Elena," they both chorused.
"My favourite boys," I responded warmly. "Gift from Sebastian," I said, handing the package to Mason who happily received it.
"I also thought you'd want to play with Skye in the garden or whatever mischief you two have been up to," I told them, standing up straight.
"We're happy to have her," Lucas said, taking the leash from me. "Thank you, Elena."
"Boys!"
I'd recognise that stern voice anywhere. They didn't seem much fazed by the threat it held although they did choose to flee back to where they'd come from together with Skye, giggling so hard I continued smiling.
My smile faded as Mom approached me with her usual tense canter.
"I thought you preferred those sharp-clawed orange menaces over the calmer choice of pets," she commented, watching the twins run away with Skye before she redirected her attention to me.
"Her name is Skye and she's family," I informed her. "You do not need to worry about her being around the boys. She's well-mannered for a puppy and pretty much desirable company."
She smiled, pretty much to my surprise. "I'm pleased to know you've already begun expanding your family with your husband whom I thought would be joining us for the weekend."
"He's had a rather long week and the last thing I'd wish upon him is to endure a weekend observing whatever it is that naturally takes over whenever we're within the same four walls."
Mom softly hummed with her arms loosely folded. "This might come as a shock to you Elena given your attitude towards me, but my maternal instincts towards all my children are equally strong, yourself included. Perhaps you'd see that if you quit treating me like an enemy."
"Nice try," I chuckled, shaking my head. "Maybe use those strong maternal instincts to bring out your daughter before her mysteriousness begins to torment us in suspense."
