Running after Sebastian's car in high-heeled shoes was certainly a humbling and embarrassing experience.
I wasn't even sure why I wanted to join him this morning and get to the office together. I just knew I had some questions he needed to answer. I'd figure it out once we were within a talking range.
Luckily, the car hadn't started moving yet, hence I could easily open the door once I got to it, my breathing rugged.
Two pairs of naturally curious eyes met my panting mess and I couldn't help but instantly feel I shouldn't have come here in the first place.
I didn't think she'd still be here moreover, travelling with him.
My lips stretched into an awkward smile as I decided at that moment I'd officially embarrassed myself and wouldn't continue doing so.
"Oh," I said as normally as I could. "I thought Claire was in here. I'm sorry."
I instantly shut the door, mustering my confidence to walk back into the house. I could see Claire leaning against a pillar by the entrance, her arms folded. The look on her face told me she'd use this moment to her advantage all day long until I was pissed. I deserved it.
What the fuck was I even doing?
I heard the door open and close behind me followed by the sound of fast-paced strides behind me. I didn't bother looking behind me until I felt my wrist being grabbed gently but firmly and I was being pulled backwards.
I turned around sharply, my eyes instantly connecting with Sebastian's as he took a step towards me, leaving barely any distance between us.
He was usually timid around me, nervous and unable to make eye contact but at this moment, he felt bolder, his aura changed.
His expression was solid and nearly blank, something anyone could easily mistaken for cold, but I'd seen his cold side before and this wasn't it.
What had changed overnight?
I didn't say a word while I tried to regulate my breathing, and for a while, neither did he, just holding my wrist and following my eyes.
"I'm sorry," he finally spoke, gently letting go of my wrist. "She came in while I was wasted and she's leaving now."
I didn't expect him to say that, but I regained my composure, faking normalcy.
"You don't have to explain yourself or apologise for anything," I told him. "I don't mind."
Despite our contract, we weren't committed to each other and he could be with someone else for all I cared. I was doing the same, something I was convinced he was aware of, and he didn't seem to care either.
"You do," he said confidently. "You're angry."
"I'm not," I was quick to respond. He'd definitely never seen me angry.
