Violet Alleb set the last moving box down in her new house with a tired groan. She looked around the empty home, and outside the windows and saw the sun set over the horizon. "This will do.'' She said to herself. It was a tiny little place, which was fitting for the town she moved into. Maycomb, Alabama. An odd choice for her, but she didn't really have a choice, but that was besides the point. What she cared about now were only two things. Firstly, starting her life over again with a new job in a new place with new people, and secondly, getting a good night's sleep, which was why she decided to wait until tomorrow to unpack everything before climbing into bed and turning the light off.

Violet woke up to a sunny almost-fall morning, slowly remembering that she was in a new place. She quickly got ready and stopped in the living room to the sight of several unopened boxes. She took a deep breath and quickly got to work. Violet may not have known much about Maycomb, but at least she was able to get a house and a job as a teacher. The new school year would only start in a few days, and she was a mix of excited and nervous.
She continued to open boxes and put furniture in her new home when she stumbled upon an old picture in a frame. She picked it up. It was a photograph of her and her ex-boyfriend from where she used to live. She took a deep breath, being reminded of what happened with him and what made her want to restart her life. Anxiety slowly started to fill her head by looking at him, because all she could think about when she saw him was how horrible of a person he was to her. She genuinely wondered how someone can be so abusive and not also hate themself for it.
She continued staring at the framed picture when suddenly a smile began to grow on her face. "You don't need to think about him anymore." She said to herself. She was free from him. She didn't need to ever see him again. Her smile grew as she took the picture out of the frame and tore it in half, took the part her ex-boyfriend was on, and ripped it to shreds and threw it away. She kept the part of the photo she was in, because she told herself that it was a way of reminding her that she overcame what seemed impossible.

Later in the afternoon, after a few hours of unpacking, Violet changed into some prettier clothes and decided to step outside to read on her porch just to relax for a bit. She opened her door with a book in her hands and took in the warm summer air that she wouldn't get to experience in just a few weeks due to the seasons changing. She sat down on her porch step and opened up her book to where she left off last and was got lost in a completely different world. Out of all the genres of books she'd read, she liked fantasy the most. Even though some considered her to be a little too old to dream of living in a different world, that didn't stop her from admiring the places that fantasy authors were able to create.
She set her book down when she finished reading a chapter when she heard the sound of two kids coming down the street. She didn't hear what they were saying, but after a second she saw two kids, a boy and a girl, coming down the sidewalk. The boy looked a bit older than the girl, but she couldn't tell how old they were. They seemed to be about 10, but she didn't know. The girl pointed in Violet's direction. "There she is!" She said to the boy, which Violet assumed to be her brother.
The girl saw that Violet noticed them as they ran up to her porch. "Are you the new girl in town?" The girl asked excitedly. Violet smiled. "Yes, I am. Why do you ask?" She said. "Well Maycomb is a tired old town, it's news that someone new is moving here." The boy responded. "Yeah," the girl continued. "And what's your name ma'am?" "My name is Violet, it's nice to meet you two." She said, holding out her hand for them to shake it. "Well nice to meet you Ms. Violet. I'm Scout," The girl said. "And that's my brother Jem." She finished, pointing at him.
"Have you met Atticus yet?" Jem asked. Violet looked at him confused. "Who's Atticus?" She asked. "Atticus is our daddy, he's also the town's lawyer." Scout said. "Oh, I see," Violet started, "No, I haven't met him yet." "You will eventually. If you see a tall man in a suit with glasses, that's Atticus, don't afraid to say hello." Said Jem. Violet smiled at them. "Alright, I'll be sure to say hi to him if I see him." She said. The kids ran off a few seconds later after exchanging goodbyes.
