About a week had passed since Atticus and Violet met, and the school year had finally started. They'd talked a little bit more, becoming a little closer over the three days she had lived in Maycomb. Violet was excited for the first day of school, and she found out that she'd be teaching third grade in the morning, and sixth in the afternoon. She was a bit shocked to find that both Scout and Jem were in third and sixth grade respectively, it was a strange coincidence. They both knew her as "Ms. Annoda" while Atticus simply knew her as "Violet". The days went pretty good overall. She was new to the town, so she didn't really know the unspoken rules of the town and the relationships everyone had with each other, but nonetheless she was still able to have fun teaching, which was what she had hoped for. She had a lot of fun because since Atticus and Violet knew each other, Scout and Jem saw her as more of a friend than a teacher, so they always talked to her before and after class. Her new life was starting off well.

As their friendship grew, their feelings for each other seemed to grow as well. At first, Atticus tried to tell himself what he was feeling wasn't true; he didn't think he'd have feelings like this for someone again. He didn't understand how Violet could just smile at him and she'd look stunning. And as for Violet, it felt like every time she thought of him she giggled a little inside. He made her blush every time he smiled or laughed because of her. He wasn't just handsome, he was also respectful and charming, and quite a gentleman as well.

Violet walked outside because she felt restless and just wanted to relax outside. She stepped out onto her porch and looked to her right, to find Atticus sitting on his porch swing alone, not doing anything. She wondered what he was doing there and decided to silently walk over there. She was still in her dress from that day which glittered in the moonlight. As she got closer, she noticed that he was still in his suit, but the coat was unbuttoned, revealing his vest and tie.

She quietly walked up to his porch and Atticus turned his head to look at him. "Good evening, Violet." He said softly. She sat down next to him. "Hello, Atticus. What are you doing out here at night?" She asked him. "I should be asking you the same question." He said back. "I couldn't sleep". She said. "I see. I'm just... thinking about things." He said with a deep sigh. She could tell something wasn't right. "Is something going on?" She asked. "Something happened a few nights ago, before you moved in." He said. She moved her body closer to his, so they were almost touching. Gods above, she could barely resist to, he just looked like a giant teddy bear that night.

To Atticus, the sight of Violet was nearly breathtaking. The dress she wore that day and her soft, wavy hair and the way she looked at him made her look truly majestic at night. "What happened?" Violet asked. Atticus sighed deeply. "It's a long story, but... I almost lost my children that night. Someone attacked them." Atticus said, looking down at himself. Violet gasped softly. "Oh my god... I- I'm really sorry about that. I can't even imagine what that feels like..." She said sympathetically. Violet always loved being around kids, which was why she decided to be a teacher. She usually saw a lot more positivity and light in the soul of a child than of one in an adult, and being around a soul like that always made her feel the same way.

"My children are the most valuable thing to me. If I lost my children... I lose everything..." Atticus said with a very heavy tone of sadness, looking away from her. "I understand that, Atticus," Violet said caringly. Atticus looked back at her. "If I had kids and lost them many years later, it would feel like my life would be over," Said Violet. "It seems like you're trying to act like you're happy when you're not doing well." She finished. Atticus nodded softly. "I know we haven't known each other for long, but you can talk to me about it. I'm here for you, Atticus." She said.

He didn't know what possessed him to do what he did, but he suddenly put his arm around Violet's shoulder and pulled her closer, so that their sides were touching. She felt a surge of warmth go through her, and she leaned her head into his shoulder and rubbed his back with her hand, comforting him as her face became blushy and red. He felt a sense that he just needed to keep her safe and protected, like a father protecting his daughter, and when Violet began to move her legs onto his, he felt that was his cue to pull her into his lap and wrap his arms around her. Violet hugged him, burying her head into his neck. Waves of comfort and warmth went through her as Atticus held her. He just wanted to hold her in his arms until everything was okay. He breathed in the scent of her, it smelled like he was in a field of flowers that could whisper to him saying "Everything is going to be okay..." and gods above, Atticus' body was so nice, he was soft and comforting with just the right amount of muscle, and he was warm. So, so warm, the type of warmth that Violet just wanted to be engulfed by.

After a moment, Violet pulled away and stood next to him, still sitting down. "I think I should probably go back to my house now." She said, disappointed that she couldn't stay longer. Atticus stood up. "Let me walk you home." He said, holding out his hand, an act of a true gentleman. Violet blushed and put her hand in his and let him guide her home. His hand was large and firm, yet comfortable. While the walk back home should've been awkward, for some reason everything about it just felt right. She felt safer with him. They walked up her porch and she opened the door and turned to him. "Goodnight Atticus." She said with a smile. He smiled back. "Goodnight Violet." He said, and he lifted her hand to his face and kissed it. The kiss was soft and gentle. Violet blushed before nearly stumbling as she walked back inside and closed the door. Atticus walked back to his house and back inside and they both fell asleep shortly after, but they could not stop thinking about each other.
