❛ and what hurts the most is people can go
from people you know to people you don't ❜"hi, this is sadie! leave a message after the beep," sadie's voice on the automated message rang through the silent car for god knows which time.
"fuck," jeremiah cursed. he decided not to leave a message because he knew her voicemail was full due to the fact he had spent the better part of the previous few days trying to contact her. "maybe you should try piper again?" belly suggested from the passenger seat.
"she's not answering either and neither is andrew," he said, huffing out a breath. the entire crawford family was MIA including his brother, conrad. jeremiah couldn't stop the uneasy feeling overwhelming all of his senses — something bad had happened.
"i mean," belly tried to rationalize, "piper is in a different time zone right now. andrew is probably at work," she paused, looking for more excuses, "and sadie is probably packing for college or- or she and andrew went to visit piper in italy," the conklin girl looked at the boy expectedly, waiting for him to agree.
the pair was on their way to cousins beach where they learned conrad was after visiting his dorm. that was supposed to be their first time to the summer house since susannah died. why conrad was there and why he was refusing to answer his phone was beyond either of them. in true conrad fashion, he was pushing everyone away.
jeremiah didn't look at belly, he just kept driving. her frown deepened, "you don't- you don't think they're there together, do you?" that was an out-of-the-blue question which made jeremiah's head turn to the girl almost instantly, "why would i think that?"
the conklin girl cleared her throat and repositioned herself. she looked straight ahead, avoiding the fisher boy's gaze, "no reason." he ignored the girl's behaviour, his main concern at the moment being finding his brother.
"they were acting weird at the funeral," she said, the confession weighing heavy on her chest since she witnessed a little too friendly of a moment between the two. jeremiah's eyebrows furrowed, she was being a jealous ex-girlfriend and if he believed her he would be acting like a jealous ex-boyfriend. "what do you mean?" he had to ask.
they broke up less than a week after susannah's funeral. jeremiah kept replaying the moment in his head, the fight they had and the tears in her eyes after he said it was over. he was the one who ended it all and refused to fight for them so why was he feeling a strong sense of hurt and a pang of jealousy at the thought of sadie having feelings for his brother?
he didn't get his answer because before his thoughts could spiral they arrived at the house. the house that had his mother written all over it.
he parked the car, again focusing on finding his brother as he ran to the front door, "conrad," he called out, "connie, you here, man?" the younger fisher boy stormed inside, entering the living room he finally found his brother, "connie, you can't just disappear like that. when i call you, pick up your fucking phone."
