The grass, the trees. The stars, the planets. Even the gods will fade eventually.
A mere mortal can't escape death.
We can try to prevent it and prolong the inevitable with sacrifice, medicine, or magic. But in the end, the Grim Reaper catches up. He always does.
But this cruel game of tag is one worth playing. That's why I am doing this. My friends aren't going to live forever, but they will live longer. Even dying tomorrow is better than dying today.
That is why I am doing this. I saved Annabeth because she was on the fast track to the underworld. I lured the Nemean Lion towards me and away from Thalia because she deserved to see her sixteenth birthday. I am holding the sky because I can feel the life slipping out of Percy slower than when he was by himself.
That is why the feeling of my life slipping through my fingers suddenly isn't so scary. In fact, I've never felt better.
