Did we go through all this suffering in vain?

Before death?

ONODA

Lieutenant Onoda trained as an intelligence officer in the commander grade. On December 26, 1944, he was sent to Lubang Island, Philippines. He was ordered to do all he could to prevent enemy attacks on the island, including destroying the airstrip and the dock in the harbor. Onoda's orders also promised that he would not surrender or take his own life under any circumstances, an oath of sorts. The order was strict, no surrender until death.

They would be divided into groups of four people and deal secret blows to the allied forces using guerrilla tactics. Major Yoshimi's strict orders were to never surrender, as contact would be lost. For Onoda, the lethal power of the atomic bomb and the imperial surrender leaflets distributed from the sky were just enemy propaganda. The soldiers under his command, Kozuka, Shimida and Akatsu, had the same thoughts and determination as him.
