ACUMA MAAKE KANCUBE
---------------------------------

I try to style my fresh braids in a bun, but it wasn't looking cute at all. And since they were still fresh, it hurt when I tried to style them.

I tie them back in a low pony and I quickly lay my edges.
I fix the collar of my blazer, I apply lipgloss onto my lips and I kiss the mirror 'mwahhh.'

"Acuma, what are you doing in there? We going to be late!" my mom says giving me a fright and I rush out of the bathroom.

I take my backpack and sports bag, I run downstairs. I find my mom holding my lunch in her hands and I take it from her.
"Now let's go." she says aggressively. Someone is moody.

"But I didn't have breakfast."

"I made some avocado toast, you'll have it in the car." she runs over to the kitchen island and takes a plate.

I give her a kiss on the cheek and we sprint to the car like headless chickens. I check the time on my phone and it was 7:30, damn we were really late. But the drive to my school was only 10 minutes, we were going to make it on time.

While I eat the avo-toast and I quickly revise my business notes.
Last night I read through the notes and I highlighted the important points that I think were going to be asked in the quiz. So right now, I'm just typing everything that I remember from what I studied last night. It's called blurting.

By the time I was done with that, the car stopped. I look out the window and we were parked in the drop off parking area.

"What time should I pick you up today?" my mom asks as I close my laptop.

"Oh it's fine mama, you don't have to pick me up. I'll go home with Mpumi—."

"That's not happening. Remember, you're grounded so no visiting, no visitors, no sleepovers and no chilling with Mpumi after school or weekends, besides her mother also grounded her for five weeks. You lucky I didn't go hard on you young lady."

I roll my eyes at her quickly before she goes crazy.

"But we weren't even drinking."

"But you both snuck out of my house, at night. God knows what could have happened to you and Mpumi."

I sigh and I walk out of the car. I walk up to the driver's window and my mom opens it.

"Tennis ends at 3pm but please be here by quarter to 3."

"Okay mntanam, love you." she blows a kiss and I wave, bye as I walk away.

I actually wasn't late, but I wasn't that early.
I look at the back of my phone, where my timetable is and my first period is English, but right after assembly.

I make my way to my locker and I'm greeted by a few girls and boys. But I ignore some of the boys, because they were being super cringy.

"Hey," Mpumi says joining me as we walk down the corridor stairs, in a depressing voice.

We were like the girls from Clueless walking around the school, except we weren't wearing the home outfits.

"Hi? What's going on?" I ask as we approach my locker.

"I'm fricken grounded." she exhales sharply.

"Same. But it's not that bad, come on. Five and four weeks is nothing. Imagine how worst it would if I was the only one grounded. I'd be depressed because I'd be missing out on alott." I say taking out my lunch and putting it in my locker.
I pack some textbooks that I'll be needing for today's lessons.

She scoffs, "Word."

I zip my bag and we walk to her locker which is 6 steps away, then we walk to our classrooms super slow, waiting for the bell to ring.

As we walk I tell her about my weekend with Luyolo. She didn't want me to tell her about it over the phone so I had to keep my mouth shut.

"Okay, I hear you taking about the house, his sister, his room and the pictures you both took. What I really want to know is, did yall kiss or not?" Mpumi asks and we stand by the edge of the corridor, overlooking the trees and houses that surrounded our school.

I look at her and I smirk.
"Shut up! You kisse—!?" I cover her mouth looking around if anyone heard that.
"You kissed Luyolo, the soon-to-be headboy? In his room? How?" she whispers so the student who were walking past as didn't hear what we were talking about.

"I didn't Muni, one thing lead to another the  I got on his lap and I— he, he kissed me."

She screeches jumping up and down.
"Was it good?" she stops jumping.

I nod my head while blushing a little.
"Yeeeee!!" she holds my hands and I jump up and down with her, making the students who were walking past us, stare.

***Bell rings***

We stop acting like 5 year old and we give each other a hug then do our little, butterfly handshake.

"Mwah, mwah." we both say, ending the handshake in a spider's heart. We kiss the back of it at the same time.

"See later mammacitaaa!" Mpumi says walking the opposite direction to her class.
I blow her a kiss and I rush to class.

I walk in and everyone is settling in their seats for register before we leave for assembly.

But Luyolo was nowhere to be found, it's not like him to be late or absent.

While Mrs Smith calls out people's names alphabetically, I secretly text Luyolo:

A:Where are you?

Within a few seconds he responds:

L:I'm doing a sound check with Clyronne in the hall. Future headboy duties.

A:Okay, okay I see you flexing and all. I might also run for Future head girl since there's no one to help you out with the heavy duty initiation.

L:That would be match made in HEAVEN😏

Boy bye.

I put my phone in my bag and I apply some lipgloss because my lips were really chapped.

"Acumalethu Maake ka— how do you pronounce again my liefie?"

"Maake KANCUBE, and I'm present." I say putting away the lipgloss.

"That's it." she says ticking me off.
She calls out the rest of the class list then she asks me to take it to the office, while the others lined up for assembly.

With pride and my 'main character energy' I walk to the office and I drop it off by the reception desk, alongside with other's.

I go straight to the hall and everyone is  lined up according to their grades. Smallest to biggest of course. I join the grade 11 line and I put my hands in the pockets of my blazer.

4 prefects, are situated at the glass doors of the hall, they have small notebooks and pens in their hands.
They were inspecting our uniform as we walk in for assembly.
