Adam had been feeling a strange pain in his wrist ever since the Iceland player had come down on it during the hockey game. He knew he couldn't ignore it any longer, so he confided in his friend Julie.
"You have to go to the doctor," Julie said.
Adam shook his head. "I don't think it's that serious," he replied.
Julie saw it immediately; the red and swollen wrist of Adam. She knew he was in pain, and he had no business playing in the tournament. But Adam was determined. He knew Bombay, his coach, would pull him from the tournament if he found out about his injury, and he was willing to take that risk.
"Adam, you can't ignore your wrist," Julie said. "It's obviously injured. You need to take a break and rest it."
Adam sighed. "I know," he said. "But I can't. I want to play. I'm not going to let this stop me."
Julie shook her head, knowing there was no convincing him. "Alright then," she said. "Just be careful, okay? You need to take care of yourself."
Adam smiled and nodded. "Don't worry," he said. "I'll be fine."
Julie watched as Adam continued to prepare for the tournament, silently wishing him luck. She knew he was determined to play, no matter the cost. But she also knew that if he didn't take care of himself, he could find himself in more trouble than he bargained for.
Adam was getting ready to leave when Julie grabbed his wrist and brought him into her bathroom. "What are you doing?" He asked, bewildered.
Julie looked him in the eyes and said with a calm yet serious tone, "You're hurt. I'm going to help you take care of your wrist."
Adam remained silent as Julie tended to his wound. She gently cleaned it, applied ointment, and wrapped it in a bandage.
"You should be more careful," Julie said as she finished up.
Adam nodded in agreement. "Thanks for your help," he said softly.
Julie smiled and replied, "No problem. That's what friends are for."
Adam smiled back and gave her a hug, grateful for her kindness. He then said goodbye and left, feeling a little bit better.
Adam watched in awe as Julie carefully tended to his injured wrist. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing, and he was a little shocked by her knowledge. He asked her a lot of questions, wanting to know how she had learned so much.
"My mom is a nurse so she taught me a lot," Julie explained. "I've been taking care of sick and injured people since I was a kid."
Adam was fascinated by the way she handled his injury. Her movements seemed so effortless, almost like she was born to do this. He was filled with admiration for her and her skill.
"Wow," he said. "I'm impressed. You know, I wish I had your talent."
Julie smiled at him. "You don't need to have a special talent to help people. All you need is a willingness to learn and the desire to help."
Julie had been tending to Adam's wrist for the past several minutes. It was a bad wound but she had managed to stitch it up. She looked up at him, her hands still on his arm, and then suddenly he leaned in and kissed her.
Adam pulled away suddenly, not sure why he had done that. Julie smiled at him and then leaned in and kissed him again. This time, Adam didn't move away and the kiss lingered.
"What was that for?" Adam asked, finally breaking away.
"Just because," Julie replied, her cheeks flushed.
Adam smiled and then looked away, embarrassed. "I should get going," he said, standing up.
Julie nodded, but as he turned to leave, she caught his arm. "Wait," she said. "Don't go yet."
Adam paused and then turned back to her. "What is it?"
Julie looked up at him, her expression serious. "I just wanted to say thank you," she said. "For fixing my wrist. And for the kiss." She smiled shyly.
Adam grinned. "Anytime," he said. He leaned in and kissed her again, and this time there was no hesitation. When they finally pulled away, Adam gave her one last smile before turning and walking away. Julie watched him go, her heart fluttering with joy.
