Luis adjusted the collar of his shirt for what felt like the hundredth time as he stood outside Mindy's childhood home. The late afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the modest suburban house, making the white siding appear almost amber. He could hear the faint sound of a baseball game from a nearby open window, and inside, the murmur of voices that he assumed belonged to the people who had raised the woman he loved.
Mindy squeezed his hand. "You nervous?"
"A little," Luis admitted, exhaling slowly. "What if they don't like me?"
Mindy smirked. "Then I'll just have to marry you without their approval."
Luis chuckled, shaking his head as Mindy knocked on the door. Moments later, it swung open to reveal a man who looked like an older version of Mindy—same sharp eyes, same confident stance.
"You must be Luis." The man extended his hand. "I'm Robert, Mindy's dad."
Luis shook his hand firmly. "Nice to meet you, sir."
Mindy's mom, Diane, appeared beside her husband, wiping her hands on a dish towel. "Oh, so this is the famous Luis." She smiled warmly before pulling him into a brief hug, catching him off guard. "Mindy talks about you all the time."
Mindy rolled her eyes. "Mom."
Diane just winked at her daughter before motioning for them to come in. "Dinner's almost ready. Come meet the rest of the family."
Inside, the smell of roasted chicken and mashed potatoes filled the air. At the dining table sat Mindy's younger brother, Ethan, flipping through a magazine. He barely looked up as Luis approached.
"Ethan, say hi," Mindy nudged him.
Ethan sighed dramatically and finally looked at Luis. "Hey."
Luis gave a small smile. "Hey, man. You into sports?"
"Baseball," Ethan said flatly. "You?"
"Hockey," Luis replied, earning a more interested glance from the teen.
Robert clapped a hand on Luis's shoulder. "You play?"
Luis nodded. "Yeah, been playing since I was a kid."
That seemed to win Robert's approval. "Now that's a real sport."
Dinner was lively, filled with stories from Mindy's childhood—embarrassing ones, mostly. Diane and Robert clearly enjoyed telling Luis about the time Mindy cut her own hair as a toddler, or how she once tried to sneak a stray cat into the house by hiding it in her backpack.
Luis laughed along with them, growing more comfortable by the minute. Even Ethan eventually warmed up, engaging in a debate about whether hockey or baseball required more skill.
By the time the night ended, Luis felt like he had truly gotten a glimpse into where Mindy came from. As they stood on the porch, saying their goodbyes, Robert gave Luis a firm nod.
"You seem like a good guy," he said gruffly.
Luis didn't take the words lightly. "Thank you, sir."
Mindy beamed at him as they walked to the car. "See? That wasn't so bad."
Luis exhaled. "Yeah. One down, one to go."
A week later, it was Mindy's turn.
Luis's childhood home was different from hers—bigger, louder, and filled with the unmistakable energy of a house with multiple siblings. As soon as Luis opened the door, a young woman practically launched herself at him.
"There's my big brother!" Jasmine squealed, hugging him tightly before pulling back and eyeing Mindy. "And this must be the girlfriend."
Mindy smiled. "That's me."
Jasmine grinned. "I'm Jasmine, the fun sibling."
"She's also the nosiest," came another voice, deeper and more laid-back. A tall man with an easy smile leaned against the wall. "JT," he introduced himself. "Older than this guy, but younger than Jasmine. Nice to meet you."
"You too," Mindy said, shaking his hand.
"Mom's in the kitchen," Jasmine announced, already pulling Mindy along. "And Dad's probably in the den, watching the game."
Luis shot Mindy an apologetic glance as Jasmine chattered excitedly, practically grilling her with questions.
"So, how did you and Luis meet? Was it love at first sight? Who made the first move? How serious is this? Are we talking wedding bells?"
Mindy laughed, answering as best she could. "We met at a party, and no, it wasn't love at first sight. He was cocky, and I wasn't impressed."
JT smirked. "Sounds like Luis."
"But he grew on me," Mindy continued, giving Luis a teasing glance. "And here we are."
Jasmine pouted. "That didn't answer my last question."
Before Mindy could respond, Luis's mom, Elena, appeared with a warm smile. "You must be Mindy."
Mindy nodded. "It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Mendoza."
Elena waved a hand. "Please, call me Elena. Come, sit."
Dinner was just as lively as at Mindy's house, but in a different way. Luis's family had a habit of talking over one another, the conversations overlapping. JT cracked jokes about Luis's childhood mishaps, like the time he got stuck climbing a fence and had to be rescued. Jasmine continued her interrogation, much to Luis's annoyance.
"So, when do we get nieces and nephews?" Jasmine asked with a mischievous grin.
Luis groaned. "Jas, we're not even married yet."
"Yet," Jasmine repeated dramatically, winking at Mindy.
Mindy laughed, thoroughly entertained by the dynamic.
By the end of the night, she felt like she had known Luis's family forever. As they stood by the door, saying their goodbyes, Elena took Mindy's hands.
"I see why my son adores you," she said warmly. "You're wonderful."
Mindy felt a lump in her throat at the sincerity. "Thank you, Elena."
Luis wrapped an arm around her shoulders as they walked to the car. "Told you they'd love you."
Mindy leaned into him. "Yeah, but I think Jasmine might start planning our wedding without us."
Luis laughed. "Sounds about right."
As they drove off, both of them knew—meeting the families had only confirmed what they already felt. This was the real deal.
