Haeun was furious when Ji-ah told her. Sitting on Haeun's bed, she buried her head in her knees.
Haeun offered to let Ji-ah stay at her place, but she refused. Haeun's family was well-off, and they lived in a bungalow.
Ji-ah felt like she had nothing left. Not that she would ask her friend for money.
The afternoon sunlight casts in from the window, making Haeun's room look even more comfy. Her room was embellished with band posters, and her desk was sprawled with makeup.
Ji-ah told Haeun's mom that she was only visiting. She didn't want to disclose her situation to her.
Haeun sat on her pink plush sofa, the corner of her lips pulled down.
"It's fine Ji-ah, we have lots of room we don't even use!" Haeun tried to reassure her.
"But.." Ji-ah didn't want to become a parasite, feeding off from her friend. She had to find a place on her own.
"You don't have to feel guilty. Mr. Kang is the one who should!" Haeun huffed. "Plus, it's only temporary. My mom has a lot of connections. I'll ask her to find a place!"
Ji-ah looked down, unable to meet her friend's eyes. She had a lump in her throat, her tears starting to well up again. Her eyes were still swollen from last night.
Haeun frowned at her friend. "Forget Mr. Kang, forget everything," Haeun put her hands on Ji-ah's shoulder. "At least you're not working for a criminal." Ji-ah could feel the warmth of her friend's touch, grounding her from bursting into tears. "Imagine how much danger you could be in."
Haeun pulled her into a hug, patting her back. "It's okay. You'll be fine." Her voice soft. Ji-ah tried to blink away her tears.
Ji-ah wrapped her arms around Haeun. The vanilla smell in her room comforted her. She wanted to stay here.
Haeun retracted back, her deery eyes examined Ji-ah's face. "Let's just hang out in my room today okay?" She held Ji-ah's hands. "We can watch movies, or just do whatever you want."
Ji-ah's gaze landed on the boutique bag in the corner of the room, the dress forgotten since yesterday. They were supposed to go to the party tonight.
Ji-ah glanced up at her friend. Haeun was excited to go. They can't miss it just because of her.
"What about the party?" Ji-ah asked expectantly.
"We don't have to go," Haeun said, fiddling with her hands.
"We can go. We bought the dress anyway, might as well wear it." Ji-ah mustered a smile.
"Are you sure?" Haeun said with concern. "Don't force yourself to go."
"I'm sure. Let's go." For now, Ji-ah just wants to forget everything.
"Okay.." Haeun said slowly. "We have to get ready then." She looked around her room, deciding what to do first.
