Boom.
The sound startled Ji-ah awake. She opened her eyes, and blinked groggily as she looked around the room.
It was still dark. Turning her head, she spotted Jungwon beside her, sleeping peacefully. When her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she could make out the lines of his face and eyes.
Something about him looked so beautiful and tender in this moment. His face was softened by sleep, the usual intensity in his expression replaced by something gentle, almost angelic. His arm remained draped around her waist, holding her close even in slumber.
Ji-ah closed her eyes again, savoring this peaceful moment as their breaths mixed. His warmth enveloped her, comforting and lulling her back to sleep.
Boom.
Her eyes snapped open again, her brows furrowing. The noise was louder this time, and for some reason, something about it bothered her.
Ji-ah slowly sat up, careful not to wake Jungwon. She slowly moved his arms away, then climbed off the bed. She moved to the window and pulled the curtain aside, taking a peek outside.
Boom.
A flash of firework erupted in a kaleidoscope of colors not far away. The dazzling lights painted the dark sky in vibrant hues, their echoes reverberating through the stillness.
Ji-ah let out a small sigh, realizing it was New Year's Day. Of course, people were celebrating.
A soft rustling behind her drew her attention. She turned to see Jungwon shifting in bed, his hand patting the empty space beside him. His brows knit together as he stirred, his eyes still half-closed with sleep.
He looked confused when he saw the spot beside him was empty. He sat up, and when his gaze finally found her by the window, it softened.
"Hey," Ji-ah muttered, a small smile in her lips.
"Hey," Jungwon replied, a faint, sleepy smile tugging at his lips.
"What are you doing over there?" he asked, his voice rough with drowsiness.
"I heard a sound," Ji-ah explained. "But it's just fireworks."
"Fireworks?" He looked briefly confused.
"It's New Year's Day," she reminded him.
"Oh..." he mumbled, his voice trailing off. He stood up, running a hand through his fluffy hair, which somehow made him look even more endearing.
His hair remained adorably tousled, and his half-lidded, sleepy eyes gave him a charm that was so different from the intensity she'd seen in him before. He crossed the room to her and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his head against her shoulder.
"Did the fireworks wake you up?" he asked, his voice a low murmur against her ear.
Ji-ah leaned into his touch, the warmth of his embrace chasing away the lingering tension in her body. "Yeah, I guess they did."
He hummed softly, tightening his hold on her as if grounding both of them in the moment. Outside, the fireworks continued to paint the sky in bursts of color, but neither of them paid them much attention.
Boom.
This time, the sound seemed to come from outside the door.
Ji-ah straightened, her head turning to the door. "Did you hear that?"
"What?" Jungwon said, unwrapping his arms.
"It sounded like it was from outside the door," Ji-ah said, her voice low.
