Flying without wings

In his room, Gu Wei looked at the floating sword in front of him with critical eyes, his fingers performing a hand seal to keep the metal hovering.

Now... How am I supposed to ride this thing? Do I just climb on it like a stair or what? But is this safe? It's too narrow to stand on. And what if I fall and crack my head open? Or worse, cut myself  with this terrifying sword that can cut tree trunks like it was a piece of cake?

He sighed tiredly as he eventually decided to 'just fuck it and give it a shot'. For his survival, he would need to learn how to do this sooner or later anyway.

With that thought, he carefully stepped one foot on top of the shiny blade right at where he thought the gravitational point would be distributed evenly and prayed to Heavens that he won't slip and stab himself with something called 'whatever', and get himself killed in the process. He tried to ignore the strange feeling of weightlessness that was slowly pushing his other foot up the spiritual tool. He already gave up trying to associate science and logic with the magic of cultivation world. This world just didn't make sense and common sense doesn't really exist in this place.

"Oh..." He breathed out in surprise and relief as both his feet were planted firmly and steadily on the surface of the sword. "This is... better than I expected." He admitted quietly to himself. It was like just like stepping up a stair. The only difference is there was some sort of magnetic force that kept his feet glued to the sword.

But I am just floating so far. What if I move?

Gu Wei tried the gestures that he learned from the book and tried to command the sword to turn to the left direction. He started chanting the sword incantation that had been described in the book in his mind. He found that the words sounded almost as easy as breathing. He could feel the warm energy that flowed through his veins being channeled into Suibian and the blade buzzed in reciprocal, obeying him. He could feel the air around him flow with the movement as it turned like a hovercraft. It felt effortless and so natural. Like it was meant to move like this. That made him felt a little proud of achieving what he thought was ridiculous at the first place.

Well, this is not that difficult. Perhaps, I can master this soon.

As he continued practicing, a knock on the door startled him. He almost had a heart attack as he lost focus for one moment causing him to almost tumble down from the sword, but thankfully his reflex was fast and the sword was steady enough to allow him to keep his balance. His hands trembles from the fight or flight hormone that suddenly assaulted him.

One day, I may develop some sort of dysrythmmia from all the shocks I get I swear! Or panic disorder!

He took deep breaths to calm himself down before stepping down from the blade and sheathing it back to its shell before opening the door.

And there stood Lan Wangji. In all of his glory. Like a deity that has descended from Heaven to bless humanity with his presence. As if he was the embodiment of the Gods themselves incarnate, clad in white robes and an invisible halo.

Damn he sparkles! What did he eats for breakfast? Glitters??

"It's time to go, Wei Ying," The alpha stated calmly as his gaze flicked over Gu Wei.

"Right..." Gu Wei muttered to himself and followed the tall alpha out.

They walked side by side in complete silence, but Gu Wei wasn't really bothered. The silence wasn't awkward, not exactly at least. He preferred it that way. It gave him space to think things through and to analyze them. Although, right now he was questioning his decision to go on this mission with Lan Wangji.
