Stepping through the corridor April held her books tight to her chest avoiding looking at anyone - trying to make her way to her final class of the day - just one more hour and then she could go home to the monsters that hid in her closet and her mind. "April! April!" April bristled her grip tightening on her books as the loud hurried footsteps came towards her. "April! Look, I got a new top. It's cool, isn't it? When you've got tits like mine, you've gotta flash them haven't you?" Katie said making April turn to face her- tired of the girl's voice sounding like sugary sweet and everything bitchy.
"Sorry?"
"Breasts, girl. You should try it." Katie smiled.
"I never try." April said giving Katie her fakest smile before walking off to her English class. April set her books down on the desk furthest from the front hoping that she'd remain unnoticed until the end of the lesson.
"April. Hi." April held back a sigh of annoyance as Freddie appeared beside her, his books placed down on the desk as he sat down. April gave him a quick smile, resuming the doodle on the edge of her notebook. "I haven't seen you since Cook's birthday." He said
"Yeah. I had lots of homework to do, you know." April said - Freddie knew that he was in half of her classes and her form.
"Right. So how've you been?" Freddie asked.
"Terrible! My girlfriend just offed herself because I'm such a dickhead and I'm having an existential crisis about the sudden death of my father by my obviously tyrannical uncle who I'm too much of a pussy to kill." April said, her face serious as she looked at Freddie in the eyes.
"What you on about?" Freddie asked in confusion, his face screwed in confusion.
"Hamlet." April said gesturing to the dog-eared book sitting between them.
"Right. That's what happens?" Freddie asked confused looking at his untouched copy of Hamlet.
"Yeah. I just saved you the pain of reading the book for coursework." April smiled as the bell rang signalling the end of class and the day. April stood gathering her books and placing them into her bag.
"Thanks." Freddie said watching her walk out "April?" He called making her stop in her tracks, people brushing past her to get out of the building as fast as possible.
"Yeah." She turned her feet carrying her over to the emptying classroom to the tanned boy rushing to stuff his books into his bag.
"If you aren't doing anything later - we can hang out if you want." Freddie said making April recoil her hand tracing the white rings on her wrist - her nervous habit as she bit her lip in thought.
"Umm I got homework to do." April said shaking off her awkwardness to give a smile to the boy as she backed out of the classroom into the emptying halls. "But I'll text you if plans change, okay." She added quickly to spare Freddie's feelings.
