Chapter Three | Reid

"You've been super quiet today, little butterfly. I'm worried about you." My Eliana lays on her back in the grass with her eyes closed and her hands resting on her stomach. "Ellie?"

"I killed a man today." Her voice is soft, but she sounds like she's on the verge of crying. She keeps her eyes closed but continues. "He was innocent." She whimpers and my brows furrow.

"What happened?" I question, shuffling a little closer to her and brushing a strand of curly hair away from her face. My chest tightens when she flinches at my touch and opens her eyes finally sitting up to look at me. "What happened?" I ask her again in a gentler tone.

"I didn't want to kill him." She shakes her head frantically, tears running down her cheeks. "I didn't want to, Reid, please, believe me, forgive me!" She sobs and I wrap my arms around her letting her cry into my neck.

"It's okay, Ellie." I comfort her, rubbing her back gently. "It's okay, I'm not mad at you."

"No, it's not!" She pulls away, wiping at her eyes aggressively to the point I have to pry her hands away from her face to stop her from hurting herself. "Dr. Baker forced me to kill him!" My mouth drops open, and I release a deep breath.

It was bound to happen. I had to do the same a year ago, but I promised myself I would try my hardest to stop it from happening to Eliana. My first kill was painful, but since then I've killed nearly a hundred men and I've only just turned sixteen. I've become numb to it, but that's okay because I can handle it. What I can't handle is Eliana having to go through the same shit and what's worse is that this is only the beginning.

"I didn't want this life. I don't want this life." Eliana sobs, standing up and I follow her, now towering over her shorter frame. I'm already six foot two compared to Eliana who is only five foot four. I always tease her about her slow growth, but she told me she'll grow to be almost as tall as me one day. I smile gently.

"What do I always promise you?" I cradle her face and lean down to press our foreheads together. She looks up at me with her big brown eyes, her full lips opening slightly. "What do I always promise you, little butterfly?"

"That you'll keep me safe no matter what and that you'd let death take you before you ever let me get hurt or if you hurt me." I smile proudly at her.

"This is who we are, Eliana. We're trained to be assassins, but it won't always be the innocent people we kill. We will kill the bad guys, the ones who don't belong in this world, the ones who do cruel things." I speak out, keeping my hands on her face.

"Like Baker?" She whispers.

"Yeah, like that ugly fucker." Her eyes widen and she looks around worried that someone could have overheard my insult because a boy last week got killed for badmouthing Baker. "Look at me." Her eyes snap back to mine and I press a kiss on the corner of her mouth.

"Have I ever told you, you have the prettiest eyes? I could stare at them all day. They make me feel so calm." She beams and I chuckle, rolling those said 'prettiest eyes' but just grateful that her mood has brightened even if it is only a little.

"I better look after them then so you can stick to that comment of looking at them all day. I'd love to have your eyes on me all the time." I smirk and a blush coats her soft brown cheeks. "Guess what?"

Her eyes gleam in excitement because she knows what's coming. "What?"

"I love you." I gaze down at her, and her smile only gets wider.
