Chapter Fifty-Eight | Eliana
2 weeks later
"Your engagement party is tomorrow night and here we are the night before sneaking into the deceased's office." River grumbles to herself, leaning against the wall and picking at her nails.
I pause my rummaging through one of the drawers at Baker's desk and look at my friend. "Sorry, did I force you to come here? If I recall, you wanted to come for the ride because you were fucking bored." I retort and she huffs, rolling her eyes. "Now make yourself useful and fucking help!"
"What are we looking for?" River tilts her head.
Elena and River are the only ones I've told about Reid being a level 10. But a part of me is hoping that Baker had left that note I found in his pocket on purpose, to scare me one last time before he died. We are in one of the clubs he used to own, ransacking his office.
"More proof of Reid's status."
"Why don't we tell him?"
"No!"
"He has a right to know, and he could be a risk too. We could get him to see the specialist that the others are seeing." I think about it for a moment.
Ellie and Ross are seeing a specialist that King found to help de-radicalise them, despite them not being triggered. It's all as a precaution while we have the time before my mother makes an appearance again.
Ivan hasn't had the chance to see the specialist because he is still in a coma. There is a high chance he might not wake up and the thought of that makes me physically sick. I'm in denial of the fact, however, deluding myself into thinking he will wake up anytime soon.
I then think about how Reid would react if I broke the news to him that he is a level ten. Would it trigger another bipolar episode? He's been so good, taking his medication every day and he even has a diary he writes in when he needs to offload his thoughts. I have to take into consideration that I'm unaware of Reid's trigger. What will cause him to flip the switch?
"Eliana?" I turn my head to face Elena who holds up a folder and hands it to me.
I flick through the pages with furrowed brows. And then one page has me pausing.
It's Reid's profile, listed with his age, height, all his physical attributes as well as his combat skills.
"It just states he's a level seven." I point out, checking the rest of the pages and finding nothing. This folder was last dated the year of the breach ten years ago, which means Reid can't be a level ten. "So, Baker was just fucking with me." I let out a sigh of relief and release a deep breath.
"Thank fuck for that! Imagine if it were true!" River exclaims with wide eyes. "I wouldn't wanna be on the receiving end of a gun if he was holding it."
"Let's go." I nod and pick up the lighter on the desk and set the curtains by the window alight. I will make sure to burn any traces of Baker.
...
"Eliana! Eliana!" My little sister rushes toward me in excitement as I climb out of the car. "Ivan is awake! He's awake!" I gasp, my eyes bulging.
"What?!"
"He's awake! Come on!" She grabs my hand in her little one and drags me toward the house and straight to the room that Ivan is in.
We burst through the door and a small sob leaves my mouth when I see Ivan awake, propped up against some pillows with a lazy smile on his face.
